The story of Naturarena Hohe Warte: Modernization and European Cup

European Cup premiere

It was a long wait, then at the end of the 1980s the time had come: The Vienna experienced its European Cup premiere on the Hohe Warte. Under the successful coach Ernst Dokupil, the Vienna team qualified twice for the UEFA Cup. However, the draws did not bring the hoped-for top clubs from Europe to Klabundgasse 11, but rather food for fans of Scandinavian football with the Danish representative Ikast FS and Turun PS from Turku, Finland. In the following European Cup season, Vienna were allowed to compete against the Greek record champions Olympiakos Piraeus. On October 17, 1989, the two teams parted in front of 6,000 spectators with 2:2 on the Hohe Warte (1:1 in Athens).
