Statement by First Vienna Football Club 1894 on yesterday's decision by the Austrian Football Federation
We have taken note of the decision by the Austrian Football Federation, which was made on the basis of a legal report by the Johannes Kepler University in Linz.
Of course, we regret that we cannot successfully finish what has been a promising season for our men and women – and for our youth teams too. In this exceptional situation, however, it would be wrong to engage in a hypothetical "What if” discussion and to consider taking legal steps. This would not be expedient or in line with the Austrian approach, which we are fully committed to.
Given the current situation, we understand the decision. Health takes precedence. We all have to contribute to the containment of the corona virus. There's no way around that.
As the first and oldest football club in Austria, we are aware of our role model status and our social responsibility.
Of course, we all hope this stressful situation soon passes and that all our lives get back to normal, which would also mean we can all return to the Hohe Warte stadium. We long for this day. Until then, we appeal to the Vienna family to keep going and to adhere to the official regulations.
As bitter as it may be – on an emotional, sporting and economic level – it is currently a case of taking a step back together in order to take two steps forward again in the future.
“United we stand for victory” (Einig Spiel führt zum Ziel) was the motto of our founding fathers, and today it applies more than ever.
