Vienna Amateurs Suffer Defeat Against SV Donau
Matchday 19 of the Wiener Stadtliga saw a top-of-the-table clash between league leaders Vienna Amateurs and their closest pursuers, SV Donau. In the end, Gökce Tuna’s team had to relinquish their top spot after a 3-0 defeat to the Kaisermühlen side.
A First Half With Few Chances
The nearly 300 spectators in Donaustadt witnessed a first half with few clear-cut opportunities. A handful of long-range shots from both sides and a couple of corner kicks were the only real highlights in the opening 40 minutes. However, just before the break, the match picked up pace as SV Donau threatened Vienna’s goal from a set piece. Goalkeeper Moritz Troindl was alert and kept the score level, sending both teams into halftime with a deserved 0-0 draw.
Three Goals Conceded After the Break
Both teams upped the tempo after the restart, but it was Donau that took the initiative going forward. Troindl confidently dealt with several long-range efforts, but in the 57th minute, he misjudged a fast counterattack, missing the ball as he rushed out, allowing Marko Nikolic to slot home for the 1-0 lead.
Gökce Tuna reacted immediately, bringing on Milic for Krammer. However, just six minutes later, in the 65th minute, Donau was awarded a penalty after a foul in the box. Nikolic stepped up and calmly converted to complete his brace. Vienna then made another change, with Kacprzak replacing Dziurdzik.
Donau Seals the Win
The two quick goals visibly rattled Vienna, and Donau pushed for a third. Tuna attempted to shift the momentum by bringing on Heller for Huskovic, but the game remained firmly in Donau’s hands. In stoppage time, substitute Luca Miksch rose highest at the back post to head home a corner, making it 3-0 in the 92nd minute, sealing the final result.
Despite the tough defeat, head coach Tuna remained optimistic:
"The first half and up to the 60th minute were okay, after that, not so much. But nothing is lost—we may have lost the top spot, but we know that Donau still has to face Red Star and Wienerberg, and we are simply the better team."
However, he was not pleased with the penalty decision:
"The referee let a lot go during the game. Two elbow checks from the opponents weren’t even punished with a yellow card, and then he gives a penalty like that—it’s unbelievable."
