Vienna Women Kick Off Championship Round Against Sturm Graz
With the league now split into the championship and relegation groups, Vienna’s women’s team begins their Meistergruppe campaign this Sunday with a crucial away clash against Sturm Graz. This opening fixture will serve as a key indicator for how the next few rounds might unfold. Kick-off at the Messendorf Training Centre is set for 12:45 PM.
Battle for Third Place
Just two points separate third-placed Vienna and their upcoming opponents from Graz. A win for the Blue and Yellows would tighten the race for the top two spots, while a defeat could see them slip to fourth. The last time these two teams met in the league, Vienna fell 1–2. A well-taken free kick from Gutmann wasn’t enough to secure points in that encounter.
Sturm Graz have shown strong form this spring, winning four of their last five league matches. Most recently, Tode Djakovic’s side earned a narrow 2–1 win over SPG FC Lustenau/FC Dornbirn.
Encouragement Despite Cup Exit
Vienna’s most recent competitive outing came in the Sportland NÖ Women’s Cup, where they travelled to face defending champions SKN St. Pölten. Despite a valiant performance – including taking the lead – the Blue and Yellows ultimately fell 2–4 after conceding three late goals. While the result didn’t go their way, the spirited display was a positive sign ahead of the Meistergruppe campaign.
Season Over for Jovana Cavic
More painful than the cup exit was the injury to defender Jovana Cavic. The Vienna number 5 suffered both an ACL and MCL tear during the St. Pölten match – without any contact. We wish her all the best for a speedy and smooth recovery.
