Vienna Defeats SW Bregenz 2-1
In Matchday 23 of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga, Vienna secured a thrilling 2-1 home victory against SW Bregenz. In the first half, goals from Edelhofer and Schmidt laid the foundation for the eventual win. Despite being a player down, the visitors from Bregenz fought hard to avoid defeat, but in the end, the full points stayed in Vienna.
Turbulent Start with Chances on Both Sides
The match got off to a fast start. In the fourth minute, Vienna had their first good chance: David Ungar played a precise through ball to Luca Edelhofer, but the forward’s first touch was not ideal, and Bregenz keeper Gschossmann was able to clear the ball.
Just moments later, Bregenz threatened in the hosts’ penalty area. After a corner, Umjenovic fired a shot that Vienna goalkeeper Bernhard Unger did well to save by tipping it over the crossbar.
The early stages remained eventful. First, Luxbacher missed a great chance for Vienna from close range. Then, Unger saved again, this time from Vucenovic, who had spun around in the box to create space for a shot.
Edelhofer Puts Vienna Ahead
In the 20th minute, Vienna took the lead: Patrick Schmidt launched an attack down the right side, and Dilek delivered a perfect cross into the center where Edelhofer was waiting to finish – 1-0 for Vienna.
Boosted by the lead, the hosts kept up the pressure. Just five minutes later, Ungar fired a shot from nearly 25 meters, but it missed the target by a narrow margin.
Vienna’s Dominance Rewarded – Schmidt Doubles the Lead
Vienna continued to dominate. In the 30th minute, Steiner tested Gschossmann with a header from a corner, but the keeper made another great save. Shortly after, Dilek’s low cross narrowly missed the target.
Just before halftime, Vienna added a second goal: Edelhofer sent in a cross from the left, and Schmidt controlled the ball expertly before slotting it home from close range to make it 2-0.
Bregenz’s situation worsened shortly after: Gschossmann fouled Dilek well outside the penalty area and was shown a straight red card. With a 2-0 lead and the numerical advantage, Vienna headed into the halftime break in a strong position.
Vienna Dominates, Bregenz Pulls One Back
The second half began with no changes to either side, and Vienna picked up right where they left off. Dilek had a chance early on, but his shot from a tight angle went into the side netting.
Despite being a player down, Bregenz remained dangerous. After a solo effort from Stefanon, Vucenovic had a shot that was too weak to test Unger seriously.
In the 60th minute, Bregenz took advantage of a poor pass from Luxbacher: Vucenovic played a ball to Tartarotti, who went one-on-one with the keeper and scored to pull Bregenz back to 2-1.
An Open Game Despite the Disadvantage
The match remained open, with Bregenz showing determination and fighting their way back into the game despite being a man down. Vienna coach Sütcü responded by making fresh substitutions: Ochs replaced Luxbacher, and soon after, Titkov and Zimmermann came on for Ungar and Dilek.
Ochs had a good chance shortly after coming on but fired his shot over the bar from a promising position. Zimmermann also found himself in a dangerous position in front of goal, but substitute goalkeeper Flückiger kept Bregenz in the game with several important saves.
Final Push from Bregenz – Vienna Holds on for the Win
In the final stages, Vienna brought on Nnamdi and Diomandé to strengthen the defense. Diomandé nearly had a chance after a through ball from Ochs, but Flückiger was there again to deny him.
Despite several chances, including from Zimmermann and Schmidt, Vienna couldn’t find a third goal. In the 87th minute, Dirnberger cleared the ball off the line to deny Schmidt a certain goal.
Bregenz threw everything forward in the final minutes, including sending goalkeeper Flückiger up for corners, but the Vienna defense held firm. In the end, Vienna secured a deserved 2-1 home victory.
Conclusion: Three Points and Third Place for Vienna
With this hard-fought home victory over a battling Bregenz side, Vienna climbs to third in the standings. A strong first half, combined with resilient defending in the second half, earned the Blue and Yellows a crucial three points.
