Vienna Defeats in Derby by a Clear Margin
In the 20th round of the ADMIRAL Women’s Bundesliga, Vienna's women faced their city rivals Austria Vienna in the championship round. In bright spring weather, the team from Döbling quickly found themselves trailing 0-3 at halftime. Even after the break, the hosts could not find any answers to the dominant Austrian side. The match ended in a bitter 0-5 derby loss.
At the Naturarena Hohe Warte on Saturday, the Vienna Women played the Vienna derby in their second championship round game. Goalkeeper Pia Piplits, who had been rested, returned to the starting lineup.
Early Pressure from Austria
From the very beginning, Austria took control of the game and put Vienna under pressure. The hosts had to focus on defense, but they managed to hold off the guests for the first 15 minutes through solid defending.
First Chance for Vienna
In the 17th minute, Vienna had their first dangerous attack. Seidl came close to scoring after a well-executed passing move, but her shot did not trouble Austria’s goalkeeper Haidner.
Deserved Lead for Austria
Austria continued to dominate and deservedly took the lead in the 22nd minute. A precise cross from Weilharter found Volkmer in the box, who headed the ball into the net for a 0-1 lead.
Stunning Goal for 0-2
The visitors kept up the pressure and soon doubled their lead. Pavlovic took a powerful shot from nearly 20 meters, sending the ball into the top corner of the net. There was nothing Piplits could do about it.
Vienna Makes Substitution, Reacts
Coach Mark Dobrounig made an early substitution in the 34th minute, bringing on Tomczak for Rukavina. The change brought some life to Vienna’s attacking play, but a cross from Fankhauser found no takers in the box, and Kovar’s long-range shot went well over the bar.
Third Goal Just Before Halftime
Just before the halftime whistle, Vienna suffered another setback. A free-kick from Schiechtl just outside the box was sent straight at goal. Piplits appeared surprised, and the ball went in – 0-3 for Vienna at halftime, a result of Austria’s dominant performance.
No Relief After the Break
After the disappointing 0-3 at the break, Dobrounig made two changes, bringing on Natter and Kappenberger for Höcherl and Seidl. The aim was to bring more stability and fresh energy to the team.
Austria Remains in Control
However, even after the restart, Austria remained in charge. They played with great intensity and presence in midfield. In the 51st minute, Austria had to make a substitution due to injury: Schiechtl left the field, and Satra came on in her place.
A Narrow Escape for Vienna
Soon after, Austria had another dangerous opportunity. Triendl broke through on goal, but Piplits kept her cool and made a strong save in the one-on-one situation.
A Lucky Moment for Vienna
In the 57th minute, Vienna had a bit of luck. A misplayed backpass went to Volkmer, who rounded Piplits, but she shot just wide of the goal. The potential for a game-changing moment was missed.
Vienna Tries to Respond
Vienna tried to respond offensively, with Natter attempting a shot from a central position just outside the box, but it went well over. The best chance in this phase came in the 65th minute when Gutmann had a header off a free-kick that narrowly missed the target.
Austria Seals the Victory with a Double Strike
Hope for a comeback was squashed in the final stages as two individual errors in Vienna’s buildup play allowed Austria to steal the ball easily – and they made no mistake. In the space of a few minutes, the guests scored twice more, making it 5-0 and fully reflecting the match’s flow.
Looking Ahead
In the end, Vienna’s women had to swallow a bitter result. After an engaged but error-prone 90 minutes, they suffered a heavy derby defeat.
Next Sunday, the Vienna Women will face another major challenge at the Naturarena Hohe Warte: The reigning champions SKN St. Pölten will be in town – another tough test for coach Mark Dobrounig's team.
