Vienna Women Aim to Upset Austria in Derby Clash
One last highlight before the season finale: This Sunday, the women’s team of First Vienna FC 1894 will face a very special challenge. As part of the "Double Derby" event, the Blau-Gelben take on FK Austria Wien at 7:45 PM at the Franz-Horr-Stadion—right after the men’s Bundesliga derby between Austria and Rapid.
Two Paths, Two Philosophies
Beyond the sporting rivalry, the matchup symbolizes two contrasting approaches to club development. While Austria relies heavily on experience, Vienna is committed to nurturing young, high-potential talent.
Head coach Mark Dobrounig emphasizes: "We stand for player development—that’s not a marketing slogan, it’s our philosophy in action. Every player who breaks through here proves just how much potential our model holds."
The stats support his vision: Austria’s recent lineups have averaged 26 years of age, while Vienna’s average age is just 21. At the start of the season, no fewer than seven players from Vienna’s squad were U20 national team members who represented Austria at the World Cup in Colombia.
Tough Championship Round – But Nothing Is Lost
After an impressive regular season and a deserved spot in the Championship Round, Vienna has yet to pick up points. Still, the objective remains clear: a derby win would keep hopes of a European qualification alive and set up a final showdown against Sturm Graz in the last matchday at Hohe Warte.
"We know we haven’t shown our best in the Championship Round, but matches like this derby are made for us. That’s where we want to prove what we’re made of," says Dobrounig with determination.
Austria Favored, Vienna the Underdog with Bite
Austria Wien comes into the match as clear favorites, boasting experience and a solid second-place standing. Veterans like Kirchberger, Schiechtel, Wenninger, and Bruinenberg—all over 30—bring stability to the squad. The upcoming Cup Final against perennial champions St. Pölten is likely the season’s highlight for the Violets.
However, the recent derby history tells a different story: Vienna has won four of the last six meetings. That said, the first Championship Round clash ended in a heavy 0-5 defeat for the Döbling side.
Eyes on the Future: Vienna Stays the Course
Regardless of the table, Vienna remains committed to its philosophy. The club has already secured two exciting young prospects from the ÖFB academy for next season—Alina Kerschbaumer and Denise Lueger, both currently representing Austria’s U17 team at the European Championship. Homegrown talent Mia Tomczak is also part of the squad, another example of Vienna’s successful development program.
Dobrounig remains optimistic: "We’re thinking long-term. What we’re building here is sustainable. And games like this derby prove that we can compete at the highest level with young players."
All-in Support Needed
For Sunday’s derby, Vienna is counting on the full backing of its fans. The away section at the Horr-Stadion is expected to be lively—pushing the team toward three vital points and keeping the dream of European football alive.
Kickoff is at 7:45 PM. Be there and back our girls in the Vienna Women’s Derby!
