Vienna Amateurs drop points in Simmering
On matchday 26 of the Wiener Stadtliga, the Vienna Amateurs aimed to make up ground and overtake Donau in the standings with a win at 1. Simmeringer SC. However, following a 1–1 draw, the season now heads toward a tense and dramatic finish.
The convincing 4–1 victory over SV Schwechat the previous weekend had given the young squad a real boost of energy and motivation going into the final stretch, making a win over 14th-placed Simmering the clear objective.
Early lead from a counterattack
After the first team had conceded after just 20 seconds the day before, the Amateurs almost suffered a similar fate in the third minute, but Simmering’s goal was immediately ruled out for offside. Vienna responded right away, and after a quick counterattack, Alexander Krammer gave the visitors the lead in the fourth minute.
Vienna remained the more dangerous side and came close to doubling the lead after just seven minutes with a shot that hit the post. Throughout much of the first half, the Döblinger side controlled the match. The hosts played very physically and were repeatedly called back for fouls. Simmering struggled in the final third, and clear chances were rare. As the half went on, the game lost some pace, and Vienna went into the break with a 1–0 lead.
Vienna lose momentum after the break
The second half was more balanced, partly because Vienna took their foot off the gas. In the 53rd minute, things got heated in the Vienna penalty area when Simmering loudly appealed for a penalty following a possible foul. Referee Stefan Tikal let play continue. A few minutes later, Vienna had a great chance at the other end, but the ball was cleared off the line.
Missed penalty
In the 68th minute, the league leaders were awarded a penalty of their own. Krammer stepped up, hoping to double his tally, but his poorly struck effort was saved by Simmering keeper Jagschitz. The resulting counterattack nearly ended in a goal for the home side.
That goal came just nine minutes later, in the 77th minute. A low cross to the far post found Benjamin Soura, who tapped in to make it 1–1. He was substituted immediately afterward due to injury.
Draw remains final result
The Vienna Amateurs tried to push for a late winner in the closing minutes but couldn’t find a way through. In stoppage time, Matteo Roschütz – playing just his second game – was shown a second yellow card and sent off. Seconds later, the final whistle blew. The match ended in a 1–1 draw.
Coach Gökce Tuna gave a clear verdict: “We weren’t good today. This is not a performance we can be satisfied with. We played a lot of high balls, which they mostly won – same with the second balls. If you don’t score the second goal from open play, you have to do it from the penalty spot. But we didn’t do that either.”
