3–3 Thriller! Vienna Amateurs and Helfort Share the Spoils in Goal-Fest
In Matchday 28 of the Wiener Stadtliga, the Vienna Amateurs were involved in a true top-of-the-table clash. Facing third-placed Dinamo Helfort, the game turned into a spectacular back-and-forth contest that ended in a dramatic 3–3 draw.
The first noteworthy opportunity fell to the hosts just four minutes in, but it was the Vienna side that took control of the game early. In the 5th minute, Karl Höflich struck from distance to give the visitors a 1–0 lead. While Dinamo did show glimpses going forward, they found it tough to break through the compact Vienna defence in the first half.
Late First-Half Drama
Just before half-time, the match sparked to life. In the 39th minute, Dinamo equalised via an unfortunate own goal from Simon Ellen following a set-piece. But Vienna struck back quickly: five minutes later, Vincent Zeidler found the net from a tight angle to restore the lead. The Amateurs went into the break with a deserved 2–1 advantage.
A Wild Second Half
The second half kicked off with more drama. Just three minutes after the restart, Dinamo keeper Jajalo launched a long ball forward, which eventually landed at the feet of Besnik Mala, who slotted home the 2–2 equaliser.
Riding the momentum from their recent Vienna Cup triumph, Helfort kept the pressure on and pinned the visitors back. In the 57th minute, Vienna failed to clear their lines, allowing Christiano Ivkic to put the hosts 3–2 in front.
The goal fest wasn’t over yet. In the 62nd minute, after Vienna hit the post, Alexander Krammer picked up the rebound and squared it to substitute Louis Birkhahn, who made no mistake in converting the chance. It was Birkhahn’s 16th goal of the season. Moments later, Vienna came close again, but Jajalo pulled off a crucial save.
Controversial Offside Calls in the Final Stages
In the 70th minute, the Amateurs thought they had taken the lead, only for the goal to be ruled out for a marginal offside. As both sides pushed for a winner, the tempo dipped slightly, but chances still came at both ends.
In added time, controversy struck again when referee Patrick Koscielnicki pulled back a promising Vienna attack for another tight offside. In the dying seconds, the visitors came within inches of a dramatic winner but were just unable to get a final touch on the ball, leaving the match tied at 3–3.
The draw sees Vienna Amateurs drop to second place, overtaken by Donau, who won their match.
Head coach Gökce Tuna was generally pleased with his side’s performance but expressed frustration at the officiating:“Unfortunately, the referees simply don’t have the quality, but that’s out of our control. Top performance from the boys, but we’re conceding far too many easy goals. We’ll give it everything in the final two weeks and hope that Donau slips up.”
