Alexander Widhalm takes over leadership of Vienna Women
Austria’s oldest football club is setting the course for the future of women’s football: Alexander Widhalm is now taking over full responsibility for the women’s division of First Vienna FC. The 24-year-old from Lower Austria previously served as operational head of the women’s department and has now been promoted to overall head.
Widhalm began his journey with Vienna as a volunteer. In summer 2022, he became team manager of the women's team. Step by step, he took on additional responsibilities in youth development, operations, and as an assistant to the sporting director. With the start of the new season, he will now be responsible for the entire women’s division.
His role includes overseeing the women’s first team as well as the youth teams, including the Future League. He is also in charge of daily operations, squad planning, and the coordination and optimization of training and match operations at the Naturarena Hohe Warte and the First Vienna Football Campus.
Sporting Director Andreas Ivanschitz emphasizes the importance of this personnel decision:
“In recent years, we’ve made great progress in women’s football and have firmly established ourselves in the Women’s Bundesliga. This development reflects the value we place on women’s football within our club. Promoting Alex to this leadership role is also part of the Vienna way – fostering young talent and giving them a real opportunity. Alex has proven with great dedication that he’s ready for this responsibility.”
Alexander Widhalm is looking forward to the new challenge:
“I’m really excited to continue shaping the future at Vienna. The club has given me the space to grow into this role over the past few years and prepared me well for it. We’ll remain true to our path and continue to be a stepping stone for emerging talents in Austria. We’ve done a great job with that in recent years, and of course we want to keep developing players who can take the next step abroad or into the national team.”
In addition to his new responsibilities, Widhalm will remain actively involved in youth development at Vienna. This includes implementing modern youth development concepts, organizing projects focused on personal development, participating in training programs, and co-responsibility for the training of youth coaches.
With this decision, First Vienna FC reaffirms its ambition to remain a leading force in Austrian women’s football and to continue serving as a launchpad for young talents — now and in the future.
