Vienna Women face FCM Traiskirchen in the Cup
The wait is finally over for our women’s team as the new season is about to begin. After a short but intense pre-season, the first official match of the new campaign takes place this coming Saturday, August 9, as our team faces FCM Traiskirchen in the first round of the ÖFB Women’s Cup.
Many New Faces at Vienna
There was a lot of movement in the Vienna women’s squad over the summer. A total of eleven players left the club during the transfer window. On the other hand, several talented players have joined the team: Denise Lueger, Alina Kerschbaumer, Valentina Pötzl, and Anna Osl arrived from the ÖFB Academy. Additionally, Klara Gorges (Wiener Sportclub), Katharina Lichtenberger (FAC/USC Landhaus), Ines Sarac (USV Neulengbach), Lilah Havel (Austria Vienna), Anna van der Reijden (University of Charleston), Johanna Wende (Werder Bremen), and Lara Felix (1. FC Nürnberg) joined the Vienna squad.
Successful Pre-Season
Vienna can look back on a successful summer preparation phase, with a positive record of two wins, two draws, and only one defeat. The many new additions to the squad used these matches to make a strong first impression.
In July, the team held a training camp in Burgenland, which focused both on fine-tuning footballing details and, more importantly, building team spirit and cohesion.

Head coach Mark Dobrounig reflects positively on the summer preparations:
"With so many changes to the squad, the start of the season feels a bit like stepping into the unknown. We used the pre-season intensively, and the training camp gave us valuable time to get to know each other quickly. We adjusted a number of things, and over the course of the preparations, we gained momentum, which allowed us to quickly improve our processes and bring our game idea to life more consistently with each match."
Last season, Vienna received a first-round bye in the cup due to their participation in international competitions. This year, the team from Döbling will travel to Lower Austria to face FCM Traiskirchen, a club competing in the regional league.
Recap of Last Season’s Cup Run
Vienna’s cup journey last year ended in the semifinals. After wins against teams including Wacker Innsbruck, Coach Dobrounig’s side faced SKN St. Pölten in the semis. The Blue and Yellows put in a brave performance and even took the lead for a time, but St. Pölten ultimately came out on top and went on to win the final.
“Saturday marks the start of the competitive season. We want to use the Cup to present ourselves as a team in an official match setting. It will be important that we show conviction and bring that energy onto the pitch. Our goal is to progress to the next round and kick off the new season with a positive result,” said Mark Dobrounig ahead of the upcoming cup tie.
