Vienna Women challenge promoted side SpG Südburgenland/TSV Hartberg
The women’s team of Vienna will face this season’s promoted side SpG Südburgenland/TSV Hartberg away on Sunday, August 24. The match will be played at the Thermal Stadium in Stegersbach, where Vienna hopes to celebrate its first points of the season. Kick-off is at 12:45.
Vienna aiming to get on the scoresheet
In the opening round of the new season, Vienna lost 0–3 away to reigning champions SKN St. Pölten. However, the newly formed Vienna side put in a respectable performance for large stretches of the match and held their own against the serial champions. With Alina Kerschbaumer, Anna Osl, and Denise Lueger, three players made their senior football debut in Vienna’s ranks.
Head coach Mark Dobrounig assessed the upcoming challenge as follows:
“With Südburgenland we are facing an opponent who will approach the game with the momentum and energy of a promoted team. We must stay alert and aim to take control of the match. That means being strong in possession and imposing our style of play on the opponent. We will need to act rather than react, and be well-organized in transition defense, since their strikers are constantly dangerous.”
Return to the Bundesliga
FC Südburgenland is no stranger in Austrian women’s football. Founded in 2002, the team quickly established itself in the top flight. The club’s greatest success to date came in 2011, when they finished runners-up. After three years away from the top division, the team earned promotion back to the Bundesliga last season in commanding fashion. In the opening round, Harald Bacher’s team faced USV Neulengbach, with the match ending 0–0.
“We want to take the positives from last week and collect our first three points in this match.”
