Vienna knocked out of the Cup in Amstetten
Vienna was eliminated in the 2nd round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup after a 1–2 defeat in Amstetten. Although Abdijanovic pulled one back late on to spark hopes of an equalizer, it wasn’t enough in the end. Goalkeeper Giuliani kept Döbling’s side in the game for long stretches with strong saves, but ultimately could not prevent the exit.
The second round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup took Vienna to Amstetten. Two new signings made their starting debut: Jongmin Seo and Lucas Dantas both featured from the start. In goal, Giuliani got the nod ahead of Unger, who began on the bench.
The match also brought a special reunion: former Vienna striker David Peham started up front for the hosts.
Early approaches from both sides
Both teams began with commitment but without creating clear chances at first. In the 9th minute, Vienna faced the first real danger: after an unfortunate clearance, Amstetten suddenly broke through in numbers towards Giuliani’s goal. Okungbowa delayed cleverly, Bauer got in a crucial challenge, and finally Giuliani intercepted the ball ahead of Peham.
Chances at both ends
Vienna mainly tried their luck from distance. Abdijanovic shot over just after the 10th minute, while in the 19th Edelhofer narrowly missed after being set up by Luxbacher. Amstetten, meanwhile, threatened with quick breaks. Mayer struck the side netting from a tight angle in the 25th. Vienna’s best chance came from an Abdijanovic corner that Bauer headed just wide at the near post.
Amstetten takes the lead
In the 35th minute, the breakthrough came for the hosts: a high ball sailed over Okungbowa, and Peham pounced to finish for 1–0 – a deserved lead at that point. Shortly before halftime, Mayer curled a free kick just wide of Vienna’s goal.
The sides went into the break with Vienna trailing 0–1.
Changes at halftime
Vienna reacted by bringing on Djuricin and Titkov for Seo and Stratznig. But it was again the home side who initially looked more dangerous going forward, while Vienna’s defense stayed alert.
Vienna’s first threatening moment came in the 52nd minute: after a free kick, Szerencsi rose high but Amstetten cleared. Shortly afterward, Dantas attempted a spectacular bicycle kick but missed the target by some distance.
Giuliani shines in goal
Amstetten continued to pose danger. In the 55th minute, Giuliani produced a superb save against Mayer, who had broken free. Moments later, he also denied Peham with another strong stop.
Vienna looks for the equalizer
In the 58th minute, Vienna combined nicely: Bauer won the ball on the flank, played to Luxbacher, who laid it off for Djuricin – but the shot posed no real threat. Soon after, captain Luxbacher showed his class, beating several defenders and firing on goal, but Amstetten keeper Estevao came out on top again.
Unlucky 0–2
In the 62nd minute, Giuliani once more saved against Conateh’s effort. But just moments later, he was helpless: after Okungbowa’s clearance, the ball ricocheted off Bauer and ended up in the net – 2–0 for Amstetten.
Vienna throws on attacking power
Vienna responded by bringing on Susso for Luxbacher, Nnamdi for Edelhofer, and Schmidt for Dantas. With four strikers now on the pitch, Vienna pushed forward, but the hosts remained the more dangerous side.
Late goal sparks hope
In the 85th minute, Vienna finally struck: Rosenberger’s cross found Abdijanovic, who headed in to make it 1–2 and set up a tense finale.
Final chance – but the exit is sealed
At the end of regulation, Susso had the big chance to equalize, but once again Estevao was there to tip the ball wide for a corner. Shortly after, the final whistle blew – Vienna fell 1–2 in Amstetten and was eliminated from the UNIQA ÖFB Cup in the 2nd round.
