Vienna and Lustenau share the points in a 1-1 draw
In the 5th round, Vienna hosted Lustenau – who were level on points – at the Naturarena Hohe Warte. After Djuricin’s opener in the first half, the visitors from Vorarlberg equalized from the penalty spot shortly after the break. In the end, both teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Changes in the starting lineup
Compared to the UNIQA ÖFB Cup match, the coaching staff made a few changes to the starting XI. Captain Luxbacher was sidelined due to injury, as was Ungar, who was still recovering from a rib bruise. Bamba Susso made his first start, while Nnamdi also returned to the lineup.
Early chances for the visitors
The match began with a free kick for Lustenau just outside the box, but the shot went well over Unger’s goal. Vienna gradually gained more possession, yet the visitors looked more dangerous on the counter. In the 11th minute, Unger was forced into his first serious save, tipping a long-range effort out for a corner.
Vienna grow into the game
Vienna’s first big chance came in the 13th minute: Djuricin broke through inside the box and got a shot off while falling, but his attempt flew over the crossbar. In this phase, Vienna’s passing was sloppy, giving Lustenau several openings. In the 29th minute, Jastremski fired on the turn after a throw-in, but Unger once again saved superbly to a corner.
Djuricin puts Vienna ahead
Vienna responded with a double chance: first, Susso’s shot from a Djuricin pass (31’) went narrowly over, then Okungbowa lifted a ball into the box for Djuricin himself. The striker controlled well and finished clinically for the 1-0 lead (34’).
Slim lead at the break
Lustenau continued to push, but a long-range strike in the 40th minute was no trouble for Unger. Vienna took their narrow 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Early setback after the restart
Both teams came out unchanged, but just three minutes into the second half came the shock for Vienna: in the 48th minute, the referee pointed to the spot after Nnamdi’s challenge in the box. Rodrigues stepped up and converted confidently for 1-1.
Visitors on top
With the quick equalizer, Lustenau took control and created more dangerous chances. Vienna were pushed back deep and struggled to build attacks. Time and again, goalkeeper Unger prevented a deficit with excellent saves.
Side netting instead of the lead
In the 60th minute, Vienna had another chance: Rosenberger crossed high to Djuricin, who got a shot off but only found the side netting.
Fresh legs for the final minutes
The coaching staff reacted in the 78th minute with a double substitution: Seo and Titkov replaced Abdijanovic and Dantas. Still, the visitors kept threatening. In the 83rd minute, Unger made another spectacular stop, diving low to block a powerful header.
Late on, Vienna brought on Schmidt for Djuricin, and in stoppage time Zimmermann replaced Susso.
Fair share of the spoils
Despite an intense finish, it ended 1-1. Vienna couldn’t hold on to their first-half lead but, thanks to their outstanding goalkeeper, at least secured a point.
