Vienna Relieves Coach Mehmet Sütcü of His Duties

First Vienna FC 1894 has decided to part ways with head coach Mehmet Sütcü. This decision was made together with the club’s board after careful consideration and an in-depth analysis of the season so far regarding the performance of the men’s professional team. “This step was not easy for us, but we must look ahead and act quickly if we feel that the team is not showing the motivation and performance we know it is capable of,” said President Kurt Svoboda. The new head coach will be presented and take over responsibilities no later than the start of training next Tuesday.

After five rounds in the ADMIRAL 2nd League, Austria’s oldest football club has drawn its first consequence: two draws and two defeats in recent matches led to a comprehensive sporting reassessment, the result of which was the separation from Mehmet Sütcü.

“Memo has always worked for Vienna with professionalism, commitment, and passion in various roles – from youth teams to the reserves and finally the professional squad. Making such decisions is always difficult, especially since we worked very closely together in recent years. Although Memo’s path at Vienna ends here, I am sure he will continue successfully, and I wish him all the very best for the future. For us as a club, it is now about setting new impulses to get back to our former strength,” said sporting director Andreas Ivanschitz.

Sütcü was promoted from coach of the reserves to head coach of the professional team in March 2024. Under his leadership, Vienna finished third in the table in that same season before ending last year in fifth place. In the current season, the team suffered an unexpected Cup exit against Amstetten in the second round. In the league, Vienna currently sits in sixth place with eight points from five matches.

President Svoboda added: “The past weeks have shown that our team needs new momentum to achieve our goals for this season together. It was a difficult but necessary decision. Sometimes things simply no longer fit – but that does not mean we didn’t value the work of Mehmet Sütcü. He has worked with great dedication, passion, and strong identification with Vienna over the past years. For this, we thank him and wish him nothing but the best for his future.”

First Vienna FC 1894 also thanks Mehmet Sütcü for his contributions and commitment to the club. From his work with the youth teams to the reserves and finally the first team, he has always been a valuable part of the Vienna family. The entire club wishes him all the best for his future path.
