Points Shared in Oberlaa
The opponent in the 4th round of the Wiener Stadtliga, FC 1980 Wien, was regarded in advance as the toughest test of the current season so far. On the one hand, the red-and-whites had enjoyed a nearly perfect start with two wins and one draw; on the other, Vienna had struggled on the narrow pitch against this robust opponent last year, ultimately losing narrowly 0–1.
First chances for Vienna
It quickly became clear that this day’s task would be no easier. 1980 Wien presented themselves as a typical team for this league: physical, but with some lively, technically skilled players. Accordingly, from the start an intense and quite attractive match developed, which was repeatedly interrupted by fouls despite the referee’s generous application of the rules. One of these free kicks created Vienna’s first chance, with Staudinger just missing Birkhan’s cross. Both teams played offensively, but Vienna looked more organized and purposeful in their build-up. This also showed in a higher number of chances, though not yet on the scoreboard.
After around ten minutes, Nagele was brought down while dribbling in the penalty area. From Vienna’s perspective—and to the frustration of their supporters present—the referee’s lenient interpretation was out of place here, and he waved play on. Shortly afterward, Birkhan played a pass from the left into the penalty area to Staudinger, whose shot was deflected for a corner.
1980 Wien with chances as well
After 17 minutes, the home side had their first good opportunity. In a quick counter, Hofer found plenty of space toward goal, but Lindmoser defended strongly and successfully. Now the team from Favoriten applied pressure, with dangerous corners causing nervous moments, but Troindl and his defense managed to avert a goal with some effort.
After Vienna’s early dominance, the spectators now saw a hard-fought, open game with attacking intent on both sides. A cross from Birkhan to Staudinger was just too high, and the striker’s header went over the bar; at the other end, Pistrol cleared attentively for a corner.
Lead shortly before halftime
With halftime approaching, a mix-up between Troindl and his defense caused a scare, but the hosts could not capitalize. In the quick counter that followed, Staudinger found Zeidler, who curled the ball beautifully into the top corner to give Vienna the lead.
Hectic play after the break
After the restart, Vienna allowed themselves to get caught up in the home side’s frantic push for the equalizer. The game became characterized by many long, often uncontrolled balls and numerous duels, without producing real chances at first. Only after about 15 minutes did 1980 Wien come close again, but the resulting corner led to nothing.
Equalizer for 1980 from the penalty spot
In the 67th minute, 1980 advanced into the penalty area, and a tussle for the ball resulted in a penalty for the hosts, which Khodadadzada converted confidently. Substitutions followed on both sides, with Rammer, Weitmayr, and Milic coming on for Stogiannidis, Ellen, and Lindmoser. The coach’s hope to restore more structure in the build-up play was only partially fulfilled, though Vienna did regain some attacking momentum.
Hectic ending without goals
In the closing minutes, it was mainly Vienna pushing for the win. A shot from Staudinger was parried with difficulty by keeper Mkrtichyan, while Zeidler’s attempt lacked power. Several high balls into the box were safely claimed by Mkrtichyan. A promising move down the right ended with a misplaced pass across goal. The referee showed several yellow cards in the final phase, but no further goals were scored, leaving the match 1–1.
Coach Tuna spoke afterward of two different halves. He was satisfied with the first, where the team executed the game plan well. In the second half, however, he was not happy at all. The structured build-up play was often forgotten; the young players still need to learn to maintain composure and tactical discipline even in hectic moments.
