Vienna Defeated by Austria in the Derby, 0–3
In the 4th round of the ADMIRAL Women’s Bundesliga, Vienna faced Austria Vienna in the derby. After an early goal conceded, the Döbling side were chasing the game from the start. Despite an energetic second half, Vienna ultimately suffered a clear 0–3 defeat.
Head coach Mark Dobrounig stuck largely with the starting XI from the last home match against Sturm Graz. The only changes: goalkeeper Piplits returned between the posts in place of Wende, and Felix started instead of Fankhauser.
Early setback for Vienna
Vienna began bravely, looking to go forward right away. Austria was initially under pressure but struck clinically with their very first attack: after losing the ball in midfield, the hosts combined quickly, a precise cross pass found Olsen, who only had to tap it in – 0–1 from Vienna’s perspective.
Austria takes control
The opener gave the Favoriten side momentum. Austria increasingly pressed Vienna, though most of the danger came from mistakes by the Blue and Yellows. In the 21st minute, a misplaced pass in Vienna’s own half led to a dangerous long-range shot, which Piplits managed to save.
Chances for the hosts
In the 25th minute, Schöffel cut inside from the wing and narrowly missed the far corner with a shot. Just minutes later, in the 34th, Piplits was called into action again, reacting superbly to a close-range header following a cross.
Vienna lacks cutting edge
Shortly before halftime, Vienna finally showed signs of life. Felix tried her luck from distance, but the shot went well wide. The score remained 0–1 at the break.
Double substitution at halftime
At the interval, coach Dobrounig made two changes: Höcherl replaced Schneiderbauer, and Gorges came on for Gebert.
Vienna starts lively
The Döbling side began the second half on the front foot, at times pushing Austria back into their own half. Despite promising approaches, the much-needed equalizer didn’t come. Austria continued to look more dangerous, though their shots were either off target or saved by Piplits.
Austria waits, Vienna pushes
As the match wore on, Vienna increasingly took control, while Austria sat back and waited for mistakes. In the 71st minute, Kovar cleared a threatening cross just in time, preventing an Austrian striker from finishing.
Set-piece blow
In the 73rd minute, captain Wasser came on for Sarac. But shortly afterward, Vienna conceded again. After a corner, the ball fell to Wenninger, whose shot was initially cleared off the line by Kovar, but spun unfortunately over the line anyway – 0–2.
Austria seals the win
Despite the deficit, Vienna kept fighting but couldn’t create clear chances. In the 83rd minute, Austria almost finished it off, hitting the crossbar after another cross pass. Moments later, they did seal the deal: Triendl struck to make it 3–0.
Vienna showed commitment, especially after halftime, and pushed for a goal back. In the end, however, Austria prevailed thanks to individual quality and clinical finishing at key moments.
