Vienna secures deserved 2–0 home win against Salzburg
In the 5th round of the ADMIRAL Women’s Bundesliga, Vienna celebrated a confident 2–0 home victory over FC Salzburg. With two early goals, the Döbling side laid the foundation for success and impressed with a solid defense and composed game management in the second half.
Vienna hosted FC Salzburg in the ADMIRAL Women’s Bundesliga. Coach Dobrounig had to do without several regular players, as Covid had reduced the squad, and Lena Kovar was also unavailable.
Early lead through Pfanner
Vienna started bravely and immediately made their intentions clear: in the very first minute, Kerschbaumer tested goalkeeper Fischer, but her shot was too central. Just moments later, Vienna struck: Höcherl played a precise ball into the penalty area, and Pfanner wasted no time, firing home to make it 1–0 (5’).
Fankhauser doubles the lead from a corner
Although Salzburg tried to respond quickly, Vienna’s defense held firm. Instead, Dobrounig’s side made the most of their opportunities: after a corner, the ball fell to Fankhauser, who coolly finished to make it 2–0 (18’).
First chances for Salzburg
In the 24th minute, the visitors had their first real chance: Spinn broke free in front of Piplits, but the Vienna keeper reacted superbly. Shortly afterward, a header following a cross also failed to find the target.
Vienna stays dangerous
The hosts continued to push forward: in the 30th minute, a cross from Kerschbaumer flew just over the bar. Soon after, Fankhauser tried her luck from distance, her shot skimming narrowly past the post (37’).
With a confident display and a comfortable 2–0 lead, Vienna went into the halftime break.
Vienna unchanged, Salzburg with fresh legs
Vienna resumed without substitutions, while Salzburg made a double change, bringing on Gragger and Lutz. But the pattern of play remained the same: Vienna continued to press forward in search of another goal.
Early action after the break
In the 52nd minute came the first chance: following a cross from Fankhauser, Salzburg’s defense barely managed to clear for a corner. Shortly after, the visitors appeared threatening in front of Piplits’ goal, but the keeper was alert—and the play was offside anyway.
Defensively solid, patient in attack
Compared to previous matches, Vienna looked concentrated and error-free at the back. Salzburg’s rare attacks were consistently broken up, and when a shot did get through, Piplits was reliable.
Going forward, the game became slower. In the 63rd minute, Kerschbaumer tried a long-range effort, but it posed no danger for Salzburg keeper Fischer.
Substitutions on both sides
The visitors made changes in the 66th minute, bringing on Grünwald and Schimm. Shortly after, Vienna reacted, replacing Fankhauser with Havel to inject new energy up front (69’). A further double substitution followed in the 76th minute: Amuchie and Felix made way for Lueger and Tomczak.
Confident home win
Chances were scarce in the second half. In the 81st minute, Kerschbaumer tried her luck from a free kick, but Fischer had no problems. In the 90th minute, Höcherl had the match ball on her foot after a pass from Kerschbaumer, but the score remained 2–0.
Vienna saw out the final phase of the match with composure, gave nothing away, and secured three deserved points with the 2–0 home win. Next Saturday, they travel to face Neulengbach.
