Staudinger brace sends Vienna Amateurs top of the table
The signs ahead of this 5th-round Wiener Stadtliga match were contrasting. On one hand, Vienna Amateurs were clear favorites given their season so far. On the other, Stadlau had proven a difficult opponent last season, taking a point at the Campus and even winning the home fixture. It was therefore intriguing to see how Coach Tuna’s side would handle the challenge this time.
Energetic start and early lead
The same headline could have been used for the last home match report – and it’s one we’d gladly keep if it became a recurring theme. Stadlau did not sit back and even won an early corner, but the more dangerous openings came from our youngsters. Twice Birkhan found himself in promising positions, first denied by an offside flag, then by a foul. From the resulting penalty, Staudinger calmly converted to give Vienna an early 1–0 lead.
With the advantage behind them, the Amateurs continued to play well, pushing Stadlau mostly into their own half. However, the final sharpness in attack was sometimes lacking, and a few overplayed passes allowed the well-organized visitors to intervene in time.
Brief pressure spell from Stadlau
Their solid defending gave the guests confidence, and with some counterattacks they managed to relieve the pressure. Around the 20th minute, a series of corners created some tense moments, but the Blue-Yellows weathered the storm unscathed.
No further goals before halftime
A well-executed but wasted counterattack ended Stadlau’s strong phase, and soon Vienna were back on top. Lindmoser, Birkhan, and Staudinger all missed good chances. Just before the break, Stadlau once again threatened in Vienna’s box, but a handball from their striker nullified the danger.
Confident display after the break
After halftime, Vienna kept the tempo high and immediately put their opponents under pressure. Birkhan came agonizingly close to a quick second goal, his shot bouncing back off the crossbar. Stadlau had one notable chance themselves, breaking out neatly from Vienna’s intense pressing, but Firiaridis’ effort was turned away by Bora. At the other end, the Stadlau keeper also impressed with a save from Hoffmann-Smajic.
Staudinger seals the win
In the 65th minute, substitute Rammer surged down the right and crossed into the box. Staudinger reacted quicker than his marker and steered the ball past the keeper to make it 2–0. That proved to be the final goal of the day, even though Birkhan later found the net again – only for the strike to be ruled out for offside, to his surprise and that of many others.
As the final whistle drew nearer, Vienna increasingly controlled the game, though further chances went begging. Substitute Uysal in particular caused Stadlau’s defense plenty of problems. In the words of Coach Tuna, who was satisfied with his team’s performance: “A very good game with and against the ball, but we often made things too complicated in front of goal.”
It finished with a deserved 2–0 victory for Vienna Amateurs.
