Efficient Klagenfurt steal three points in Döbling
In the 7th round of the ADMIRAL 2nd League, Vienna hosted Austria Klagenfurt at the Naturarena Hohe Warte. Despite dominance and several chances, the Döbling side conceded the 0:1 just before halftime. In the final stages, the Carinthians sealed the deal with a 0:2.
In the top clash of the 2nd League, Vienna faced SK Austria Klagenfurt in the Naturarena. For Hans Kleer, it was his first home match in his second spell in charge of the Döbling club.
Compared to the previous week, coach Kleer made three changes. Jürgen Bauer and David Ungar returned from injuries, replacing Nnamdi and Edelhofer. Up front, Zimmermann got the nod over Susso.
Vienna start with pressure
From the outset, the hosts pushed forward and pressed the visitors early. Already in the opening minutes, Klagenfurt’s defense had to clear the first attack for a corner. In the 6th minute, Luxbacher was brought down at the edge of the box, earning a dangerous free kick. But Rosenberger’s shot went straight into the wall.
Repeated set pieces
Klagenfurt often resorted to fouls to stop Vienna’s attacks. In the 14th minute, Seo was brought down. Again Rosenberger took the free kick, but this time a Carinthian defender headed the ball out for a throw-in.
First attempt from the visitors
After a throw-in in the 19th minute, the visitors threatened for the first time, but Barisic’s long-range shot went well wide. Shortly after, goalkeeper Unger tried to build play with a pass but failed to spot the pressing Jaritz. The Klagenfurt player intercepted, but Vienna survived unscathed.
Chances but no breakthrough
Vienna remained on top. In the 30th minute, Bauer crossed into the box, the ball was cleared, and Luxbacher’s follow-up shot was deflected and safely gathered by keeper Kanuric.
Again, in the 39th minute, Vienna combined nicely forward. Zimmermann looked for Ungar in the center, but a Klagenfurt leg intercepted for a corner.
Cold shower before halftime
The Carinthians stuck to their physical game, breaking up Vienna’s attacks with small fouls, while looking dangerous with long balls. In the 43rd minute, a high ball forward was headed unchallenged into the middle by Matkovic, where Gantschnig rose to nod home the surprise 1:0 lead.
With this setback, Vienna went into the break trailing.
Halftime change
Coach Kleer reacted at halftime, bringing on Susso for Abdijanovic. Vienna remained on the offensive. In the 50th minute, Seo broke through strongly on the wing, laid it off to Luxbacher, but his long-range effort flew over the bar.
Vienna push for the equalizer
In the 63rd minute, Vienna came close after a corner: Rosenberger delivered, Zimmermann flicked it on, but the finish posed no real danger for Kanuric.
Three minutes later, Vienna made more changes: Edelhofer for Zimmermann and Schmidt for Seo. Shortly after, the visitors appeared seriously dangerous for the first time after the break. Jaritz whipped in a free kick, Unger spilled it, but Marinsek couldn’t control the rebound – lucky for the hosts.
Chances piling up
Vienna kept pressing. In the 76th minute, Bauer’s cross found Ungar’s head, but it went just over the bar. In the 79th minute, Okungbowa also tried a header after a corner, but it too missed the target.
In the 80th minute, Schmidt attempted a spectacular bicycle kick, but Kanuric was alert in the Klagenfurt goal.
Decisive blow late on
While Vienna pressed for the equalizer, the visitors struck coldly from a set piece: in the 84th minute, Austria Klagenfurt doubled their lead to 2:0 with another header, sealing the victory.
Coach Kleer tried one last double substitution (Nnamdi and Stratznig for Bauer and Ungar), but the goal never came.
