Strong performance rewarded with clear victory
In the Vienna City League, no opponent can be underestimated. Still, given the course of the season so far, Vienna could confidently take on the role of favorites in this match. And that’s exactly how our team started.
Lively start and early lead
Quote from the last home match report: “This headline has already appeared in our previous home match report — and we’re happy to see it become a regular one.” Indeed, our blue-and-yellow team once again made the perfect start. In the opening moves, Vienna got stuck in Simmering’s compact midfield, but a well-placed switch of play broke open their defense. Staudinger’s ball into the middle wasn’t converted by Zeigler, but Birkhan reacted brilliantly. 1–0 in the 6th minute!
In the 17th minute, Simmering created their first chance, but Sezen’s shot missed the target by a wide margin. By then, the Vienna amateurs had already passed up several promising opportunities. It was just a brief spark from the visitors, as Vienna remained dominant. More good chances followed — Smajic narrowly missed after a build-up through Birkhan and Zeidler. A classy move in the 20th minute overwhelmed the Simmering defense, and Ellen finished off Zeidler’s assist to make it 2–0.
Simmering reacts to falling behind
The visitors adjusted to the situation, pushing higher up the pitch and pressing our team aggressively. This temporarily slowed down Vienna’s attacking rhythm. Our wingers were forced into more defensive work, and attacking opportunities became rarer. Still, Troindl in goal was hardly troubled — Sezen fired wide from the edge of the box, and another promising attack was cut short by the assistant referee’s offside flag.
No further goals before halftime
A long ball found Staudinger, but his shot went just wide. Shortly after, he tried a lob but was denied by the Simmering keeper. Even though Vienna’s best phase had passed and the visitors grew into the game, our side held their 2–0 lead securely going into the break.
Quick decision after halftime
Any hopes Simmering had of a comeback were quickly crushed. A rapid move down the right wing, low cross into the middle, and Birkhan was in the right place again: 3–0 in the 46th minute. With that, the match lost much of its suspense. Simmering kept trying, but Valtchev’s well-organized defense never let them pose a real threat.
Staudinger brace
Another promising move freed Staudinger on the right. Instead of the obvious pass across to the unmarked Birkhan, the striker went for goal from a tight angle — and scored. 4–0. A series of substitutions briefly disrupted Vienna’s rhythm, allowing Simmering two decent attacks, but the defense held firm. Vienna responded immediately: Staudinger finished off a counterattack clinically to make it 5–0.
Missed chances in the closing stages
The game was decided, though Simmering pushed for a consolation goal. Rahman was unlucky when his spectacular strike hit the crossbar, bounced off the post, and stayed out. On the other side, Vienna’s attacks were stopped twice by narrow offside calls, and Staudinger missed the final chance in the last minute.
Satisfied coach
Coach Tuna was delighted after the final whistle: “It’s just a joy to work with these boys!” His joy wasn’t primarily about the scoreline, but about the development of the team and the way they dealt with challenges throughout the match — defensively solid in weaker spells, expansive and varied in attack, and (mostly) clinical in finishing.
