Narrow Defeat Against LAC

Facing LAC-Inter, the Blue and Yellows were up against a tough opponent. After a shaky start to the season, the team from Landstraße had recently found their form and were eager to prove themselves against the league leaders.

Home side more dangerous early on – and ultimately successful
In the opening five minutes, the hosts stayed patient, allowing Vienna to control possession but without much attacking intent. A first long ball to the tall Ferencak served as a wake-up call for LAC. Pistrol dealt with that situation confidently, but soon the red-and-blacks began to threaten repeatedly, keeping Troindl busy. In the 15th minute, however, the goalkeeper was powerless. He initially produced a fine save from Ünver’s first effort, but the ball rebounded back to the striker, who made no mistake on the second attempt to give LAC the 1–0 lead.

Good response from Vienna
Right after the opening goal, Troindl prevented a second LAC strike, and from that point, Vienna took control of the game. A well-timed through ball almost released Birkhan, but goalkeeper Maximilian Zeidler reacted quickly and got to the ball just in time. Vienna were now in the match, though clear scoring chances remained rare — largely due to LAC’s solid defensive work, which neutralized Vienna’s dangerous wing attacks. The visitors increasingly tried to find gaps with long passes behind the defense, and in the 29th minute, that tactic paid off: Valtchev’s cross found Vincent Zeidler, who beat his brother in the LAC goal to make it 1–1.

LAC retakes the lead
Shortly afterward, Vienna had the next big chance but were caught off guard moments later. In one of the hosts’ few attacks during this phase, Pistrol handled the ball in the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. Ünver converted confidently in the 36th minute to restore the lead. Although Troindl guessed the right corner, the well-placed and powerful penalty was unstoppable. With neither side able to create much more before the break, LAC went into halftime leading 2–1.

Four substitutions at halftime
Coach Tuna made four changes at the break, two of them enforced: Weitmayer had suffered an injury late in the first half, and Valtchev, who had started despite not being fully fit, could not continue. It took the reshuffled team several minutes to find their rhythm. The first chance of the second half went to LAC, as Seebacher shot well over from a promising position. In the 55th minute, Vienna put together their first good move: Birkhan held off two defenders in the box and laid the ball off to Milic, but his finish went wide.

Chances at both ends
Moments later, Birkhan again set up Zeidler, but the opportunity went begging. Vienna pushed forward, while LAC responded with quick and dangerous counterattacks, forcing Troindl into several saves. Time was running out for the visitors, whose attacking efforts lacked precision. In the 76th minute, Birkhan came close once more but was denied by goalkeeper Maximilian Zeidler. It was thanks to Troindl’s alert goalkeeping that Vienna stayed within reach until the end.

In the 86th minute, Stogiannidis stopped a counterattack with a hard foul and was shown a red card. Down to ten men, the Blue and Yellows pressed for an equalizer in vain, as LAC held on for the win.

Coach’s verdict
Coach Tuna was understandably disappointed — not so much by the result itself, but by the lack of determination in duels, the absence of courage to attack dangerous areas, and the failure to put the opponent under sustained pressure. Time and again, Vienna played it too safe, allowing LAC to regroup defensively. Concentration also waned over the 90 minutes. Still, as Tuna noted, this must be seen as a lesson to learn and grow from.
