A Lesson in Composure
After the defeat against LAC, our team was determined to get back on the winning track. However, SV Dinamo Helfort, arguably the most difficult opponent in the league, came to visit — and lived up to their reputation.
A Battle from the First Second
Vienna started the match with plenty of energy, creating the first chance inside the opening minute — but the finish didn’t find its mark. It would remain the only opportunity for quite some time, as Helfort proved to be an extremely tough side to break down. They refrained from pressing high but closed down all spaces from the halfway line onward, leaving Vienna with few attacking options. In duels, the visitors were — to put it politely — very experienced. As a result, clear scoring chances were hard to come by.
Behind After a Set Piece
As is often the case in tightly contested games, a set piece turned out to be the difference. A free kick into the box found Milinkovic, whose header gave the visitors the lead. It was Helfort’s first real chance of the match, aside from an early opportunity in the 4th minute that was ruled out for offside. That topic — offside — would come up several more times.
In their push for an equalizer, the Vienna Amateurs repeatedly tried to surprise the compact defense with balls played in behind. Most attempts failed, however, as the runs were mistimed and the flag kept going up.
Goalless Until the Break
Once, the move behind the back line did work: Birkhan crossed from the right, but Staudinger couldn’t make the most of the header and missed the chance to level the score. Another promising attack was again halted by the assistant referee’s offside flag.
Early Decision After the Break
The overall pattern of the game barely changed after halftime. Vienna pushed forward, while the compact visitors gave little away. The decisive moment came in the 52nd minute: Boana went down in the box after a duel with Valtchev, and Yilmaz converted the resulting penalty to make it 0–2.
A Frustrating Fight for the Blue and Yellows
From then on, Vienna’s efforts were in vain. Helfort’s defense stood firm, and the few clear chances that did appear went unconverted. The best example came after a fine pass from Birkhan, when Staudinger, from a central position, couldn’t beat the goalkeeper. Whatever our side tried simply didn’t come off.
The visitors, meanwhile, had a few counterattacks of their own but focused mainly on defending their lead — with all available means. They did so successfully, holding firm through a stoppage time extended by eight minutes due to multiple interruptions.
Coach’s Verdict
“Today you could see in many situations that the boys still have a lot to learn,” the coach summed up. “What works at U18 level doesn’t necessarily work against seasoned players in the Vienna league. Our technical quality is there, but we couldn’t translate it into the game today.”
