Goalless Draw Against Promoted Side Hertha Wels
In the 13th round of the ADMIRAL 2nd League, Vienna travelled to face newly promoted Hertha Wels. After a goalless first half, goalkeeper Giuliani secured a valuable point for his team with several outstanding saves, keeping the score at 0–0.
Before the upcoming international break, Vienna had one more away fixture on the schedule. Coach Hans Kleer’s side met Hertha Wels for the first time. The team from Döbling had to do without goalkeeper Unger, who suffered a finger injury in training. Giuliani stepped in to replace him between the posts.
Early Pressure from Vienna
Vienna took control early on and immediately pushed forward. In the 3rd minute, Luxbacher appeared in the box, but his shot was deflected by a Wels defender for a corner. The visitors maintained their pressure as the hosts initially struggled to get out of their own half. In the 8th minute, Bauer tried his luck from distance, but his effort went over the crossbar.
Wels Grows into the Game
After Vienna’s strong start, Wels gradually found their rhythm. In the 15th minute, a Wels attacker tested Giuliani with a long-range shot, which the keeper handled safely. Just two minutes later, Feyrer had a good opportunity inside the box, but he couldn’t connect properly with his shot on the turn.
Chances at Both Ends
The match became more balanced as both sides looked for attacking opportunities. Wels created the more dangerous chances in this phase. In the 30th minute, Vienna responded with a shot from Schmidt from outside the box, but Schröcker, the Wels goalkeeper, was alert and made the save.
Vienna’s Best Chance
Vienna’s best chance of the first half came shortly after: in the 32nd minute, Bauer delivered a precise cross into the box, Schmidt flicked it on with his head to Luxbacher, but Schröcker reacted brilliantly to prevent the opening goal.
Battle and Fog Before the Break
As halftime approached, the match became increasingly physical and hard-fought, with the fog in Wels adding to the atmosphere. After a foul on Luxbacher, Brugger received a yellow card. Vienna pushed for the lead before the break, but Wels defended resolutely and blocked the final pass.
After an intense first half with good chances for both sides, the teams went into the dressing rooms level at 0–0 — Vienna had started strongly but couldn’t capitalize, while Wels created a few promising moments of their own.
No Changes at the Break
Both teams came out unchanged for the second half. Wels took the initiative early on, attacking mainly down the wings, though without posing real danger. Vienna responded in the 50th minute with a cross into the Wels box, but it didn’t lead to a shot.
Giuliani Saves Brilliantly
In the 53rd minute, Vienna had to rely on their keeper: Giuliani made a superb save from a powerful long-range effort, clawing the ball out of the corner and then reacting instantly to block the rebound. A crucial double stop that kept the game scoreless.
Set-Piece Opportunities
The hosts made a double substitution in the 63rd minute — Bosnjak and Redics came on for Sylla and Lechner. Shortly after, Vienna earned a free kick just outside the box in the 68th minute. Seo curled the ball beautifully over the wall but missed the target by a matter of centimetres.
In the 71st minute, coach Hans Kleer also made a double substitution: Stratznig and Susso replaced Titkov and Schmidt. Near the 80th minute, Vienna had another promising free-kick opportunity, but Rosenberger’s effort was blocked by the wall. Edelhofer then came on for Zimmermann.
Giuliani to the Rescue Again – Tense Final Minutes
In the 85th minute, Giuliani was once again the hero: after a precise cross, Bosnjak headed from close range, but the Vienna keeper reacted superbly to deny him and keep his clean sheet intact.
The closing minutes became heated after a foul on Edelhofer, but the scoreline remained unchanged. After an intense 90 minutes, Hertha Wels and Vienna shared the points in a 0–0 draw. Thanks to a solid defensive performance and an outstanding Giuliani, Vienna secured an important point before the international break.
