A Point Secured at Red Star
Matchday 14 of the Vienna Stadtliga took our amateur team to Kendlerstraße to face Red Star Penzing. Based on the league table, Gökce Tuna’s team was the favorite, but everyone knew this match would be anything but a walk in the park.
First Chance Converted
In typical late-autumn weather with occasional drizzle, the match quickly developed into a hard-fought battle in which both teams initially managed to shut down each other's attacking attempts. In the 13th minute, the Blue and Yellows produced their first successful attacking move: from the right side, the ball was played between the Penzing defensive lines, Ellen quickly sent it forward to Nagele, who pushed it past the goalkeeper and into the net to give his team the lead.
Few Chances on Goal
The goal did not change the character of the match; both teams continued to struggle to create clear chances. After around 20 minutes, Ellen was played free at the edge of the box, but his shot flew well over the bar. A similar move by Penzing ended the same way, with the ball going high over the crossbar and out of play.
In the 28th minute, Red Star became truly dangerous when Troindl saved a close-range shot. On the quick counterattack, Zeidler narrowly missed the target with a chipped effort. Soos tested goalkeeper Jakl with a shot, but these were the last notable scenes of the first half, and the Blue and Yellows went into the break with a slim lead.
Chance for a Second Goal Missed
Right after the restart, Ellen had a good opportunity after a pass from Zeidler, but from a rather tight angle he couldn't find the net. Three minutes later, Zeidler failed to score with a volley due to a brilliant save by Jakl. Staudinger had provided the assist with a header after a cross from the left.
Little Flow, Many Long Balls
As both teams crowded the midfield, they repeatedly resorted to long balls forward to switch play, though with little success. Red Star won a corner this way, which Vienna barely managed to clear. On the other end, Staudinger got a shooting opportunity but missed the target.
Equalizer Shortly Before Full Time
With the final whistle approaching, the home side intensified their efforts to score an equalizer. Vienna’s defense had few problems dealing with Penzing’s attacks but conceded a free-kick in the 89th minute. Königstein curled it smartly into the box, and Turoglu directed it past Troindl into the far corner to make it 1–1. In the four minutes of added time, neither team managed a late winner, and the match ended in a draw.
