Vienna Women Earn a Point in the Vienna Derby
In the women’s Vienna derby, the Blue and Yellows delivered a strong performance. Vienna did not hide from the league leaders for a single minute and secured a valuable point with a 0–0 draw – handing Austria their first dropped points of the current season.
Quiet start
Both teams eased into the match. Slippery pitch conditions resulted in many long balls and turnovers, and clear scoring chances were initially rare.
Sarac with the first big chance
In the 15th minute, Vienna created the first truly dangerous moment: Sarac fired from the edge of the box, her low shot curling precisely toward the far corner. But Austria goalkeeper Jasmin Pal was alert and made an excellent save, tipping the ball wide.
Austria appeared threatening for the first time in the 35th minute. Modesta Uka tried her luck from distance, but Piplits saved confidently. The subsequent corner also led to nothing.
Goalless at halftime
Shortly before the halftime whistle, Vienna had a promising counterattack, but Austria stayed alert and prevented a clear chance. The teams headed into the break tied at 0–0.
Both sides returned unchanged for the second half, and once again it was Vienna who created the first offensive action. Höcherl tried her luck from distance after a counter, but Pal was equal to the effort.
Piplits keeps Vienna in the game
In the 60th minute things got dangerous following an Austria corner, but Vienna’s defense cleared collectively. Eight minutes later, Piplits had to intervene again: Uka unleashed a dangerous effort, but the Vienna goalkeeper made a brilliant save. Shortly after, she came up big once more, keeping her team in the game.
Austria increased the pressure and pushed Vienna further back. To relieve the defense and add fresh attacking energy, coach Mark Dobrounig brought on striker Denise Lueger, ending a hardworking shift for Fankhauser.
Vienna secure a well-earned point
In the closing minutes, Vienna defended the draw with composure and allowed almost nothing. For Austria, the 0–0 marked their first dropped points of the season; for Vienna, it was a hard-fought and well-deserved derby point.
