Vienna Aiming for the Next Win Against Liefering

After a successful start to the spring season, Vienna face their next challenging task this Friday. In Round 19 of the league, the Döblinger side travel away to face FC Liefering. Kick-off is at 6:00 PM.

Vienna kicked off the new football year with a real success story. Following a tremendous effort by the Vienna family, the pitch was cleared of heavy snow last Friday, allowing the top match against SKN St. Pölten to go ahead as planned. In front of their home crowd, the team delivered a strong performance and deservedly defeated the league leaders 2–1 thanks to goals from Zimmermann and Seo — a fairytale football evening at the Hohe Warte.

Head coach Hans Kleer and his team thus secured the hoped-for upset in front of their own fans. Now, the Döblinger side aim to build on that performance and impress away from home as well. Against St. Pölten, three of the four winter signings — Prohart, Odagaki, and Gantschnig — were included in the starting eleven.

Hans Kleer on the start of the spring campaign and the upcoming match:
“Against St. Pölten, we delivered a great performance and picked up right where we left off in pre-season. I’m especially pleased that we were able to reward everyone who made this matchday possible — the entire club did an outstanding job. Moments like that are worth their weight in gold. A big thank you to everyone! Now our focus shifts to Liefering. We want to take this positive momentum with us and confirm our performance.”

New Coach at Liefering

For FC Liefering, the match against Vienna marks their spring opener after their game against SK Sturm Graz II was postponed. During the winter break, the Salzburg side also underwent a coaching change: former head coach Daniel Beichler moved to FC Salzburg, with Danny Galm taking over at Liefering. There will also be a reunion with Mehmet Sütcü, who has been working as assistant coach at Liefering since the winter.

The first meeting in autumn at the Hohe Warte ended in a goalless 0–0 draw. Liefering currently sit seventh in the table, while Vienna are eighth, just two points behind.

Hans Kleer on the upcoming opponents:
“Matches against reserve teams always come with certain uncertainties, as Salzburg possess enormous quality and top talents. The key will be to implement our plan consistently and once again perform as a united team. If we do that, I’m convinced we can take something valuable away from Liefering.”

Injury Update

There is positive news from the medical department: Monschein, Szerencsi, and Rusek have returned to full team training. Edelhofer remains doubtful this week due to illness. Szerencsi and Monschein already made brief appearances against St. Pölten. Alongside long-term absentees Ungar and Alozie, Vienna will also be without Amir Abdijanovic for several weeks following knee surgery.
