Narrow Away Defeat Against FC Liefering
In Matchday 19 of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga, Vienna faced FC Liefering away from home. In a largely balanced contest, the hosts scored the decisive goal and ultimately secured a 1–0 victory.
Following the “snow miracle” at Hohe Warte, Vienna travelled to Salzburg in spring-like temperatures, where Hans Kleer’s side met FC Liefering in the 19th round. Against the Young Bulls, the head coach once again relied on the same starting eleven that had impressed in the previous match against title contenders St. Pölten.
Intense Start and High Pressing
Both teams began bravely, looking to force early turnovers through high pressing. The result was an intense, physical encounter played at a high tempo, though clear-cut chances were initially scarce.
Woodwork Denies Early Lead
The first major opportunity fell to Vienna in the 17th minute: Luxbacher picked out Zimmermann with a precise pass. The striker struck decisively, but Liefering goalkeeper Zawieschitzky managed to fingertip the ball onto the crossbar. A few minutes later, the hosts also came close when Camara finished from a tight angle after a well-worked move, only to hit the post.
Defensive Stalemate Until Halftime
After that brief spell of pressure, the game settled down. Both sides defended consistently and allowed little space for further chances. Shortly before halftime, Camara attempted a long-range effort, but the shot sailed over the bar.
Goalless at the Break
The first half ended without goals. Vienna were compact defensively and conceded little, but struggled to create opportunities of their own. The teams headed into the dressing rooms with the score at 0–0.
At halftime, the hosts made one substitution, bringing on Masching for Sulzbacher. The second half initially followed a similar pattern to the first 45 minutes. Vienna remained defensively solid and continued to allow few chances, but again found it difficult to pose a threat going forward.
Double Substitution for Vienna
In the 58th minute, Vienna made a double change: Nagele replaced Seo, and Max Mergner made his competitive debut for Vienna, coming on for Kai Stratznig. The visitors subsequently became more present in attack and managed to establish themselves in the opposition half.
Liefering Take the Lead
In response, Liefering’s coach also made a double substitution, introducing Alexander Murillo and Johannes Moser. The change quickly paid off. In the 72nd minute, Moser played a through ball into Murillo’s path, and the forward kept his composure in front of goal to make it 1–0 for the home side.
Vienna Go All In
Hans Kleer reacted to the deficit with another double substitution. Zeidler and Monschein came on to provide attacking impetus in the closing stages, replacing Prohart and Odagaki.
Vienna threw everything forward in the final minutes but rarely managed to create truly dangerous chances. Liefering held on to their lead and ultimately claimed a narrow 1–0 win.
