Difficult Away Match Against Austria Lustenau
The action continues quickly in the ADMIRAL 2. Liga. After the start of the spring season, our team will face title contender SC Austria Lustenau away from home on Friday, March 6, in Round 20. Kick-off is at 6:00 PM.
The start to the spring campaign was promising for the Blue-Yellows. With a 2–1 home victory against SKN St. Pölten, First Vienna FC 1894 made a strong statement. However, in the following round the team suffered a narrow 1–0 away defeat against FC Liefering.
Over the full 90 minutes, the match developed into an intense and evenly balanced contest with few clear scoring opportunities for either side. The Döbling-based side had chances to take the lead themselves before Liefering capitalized on a quick counterattack to score the decisive goal.
Lustenau with Momentum but Without Their Captain
Austria Lustenau did not play a league match last weekend after their fixture against SV Stripfing was postponed. Instead, the Vorarlberg side played a friendly against the Regionalliga club VfB Hohenems, winning convincingly 7–0.
Their spring league opener had already been successful. In a hard-fought match against Kapfenberger SV, Pius Grabher secured a 2–1 home victory with a goal in the 93rd minute. However, the captain will miss the match against Vienna due to suspension—a notable setback for the hosts.
Mid-Table vs. Title Race
Despite the defeat in Liefering, First Vienna continues to hold a solid position in mid-table and currently sits in eighth place. Although Liefering managed to pull slightly ahead again, the Blue-Yellows remain within striking distance.
The situation is quite different for Austria Lustenau. The Vorarlberg side currently sits in third place and is right in the middle of the title race. They are only one point behind league leaders SKU Amstetten. Recent defeats for FC Admira Wacker Mödling and St. Pölten have also worked in Lustenau’s favor, and they still have a game in hand due to the postponed Stripfing match.
Vienna Squad Update
Vienna will once again have to do without long-term injured players Ungar and Alozie. Admir Abdijanovic, who recently underwent knee surgery, will also be sidelined for several more weeks.
Seo and Meguru Odagaki are also doubtful for the match. This means flexibility will once again be required to compensate for the absences as effectively as possible.
A Special Match for the Head Coach
For head coach Hans Kleer, the match will be a reunion with his former club. He worked for both teams during his career, both as a player and as a coach. It will be his first meeting with Austria Lustenau this season; the first-leg match at Hohe Warte Stadium ended in a 1–1 draw.
Vienna’s overall league record against the Vorarlberg side is slightly positive. Since Lustenau’s relegation, there has been one win and two draws. However, Vienna has been waiting for a victory in Vorarlberg for more than ten years.
A streak they hope to end on Friday.
