Home Defeat Against the Young Violets
Vienna suffered a 0–2 defeat to the Young Violets in the 21st round of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga. After going into halftime 0–1 down, the Döbling side were unable to turn the match around.
In round 21, Vienna once again had a home game scheduled at Hohe Warte. For the Sunday morning fixture, the Döblingers hosted the Young Violets of Austria Wien.
Head coach Hans Kleer still had to do without the injured Seo and Odagaki. Youngster Nagele started once again, while Szerencsi celebrated his return to the starting lineup after recovering from injury. Zeidler initially took a seat on the bench compared to the game against Lustenau.
Austria apply pressure, Vienna grow into the game
The opening phase initially belonged to the visitors from Favoriten, who tried to apply early pressure. However, Vienna’s defense remained solid and allowed very few dangerous chances.
After this brief spell of pressure, Vienna gradually grew into the match. Especially down the wings, the Döblingers repeatedly managed to push forward dangerously, although the final pass for a clear chance was still missing.
A cross from Rosenberger found Zimmermann in the penalty area, but he narrowly missed the header as an Austria player cleared for a corner. Shortly afterwards, Nagele attempted a shot just outside the penalty area after a cleared corner, but his effort flew just over the crossbar.
Vienna push – Austria score
The home side kept up the pressure and consistently looked for the way forward. In the 11th minute, Luxbacher tried his luck from distance. The ball was deflected and fell to Prohart, who immediately shot, but again the opening goal missed by only a few centimeters.
Right in the middle of this strong phase for Vienna, the visitors struck. After losing the ball in midfield, Austria quickly switched to attack and moved forward down the flank. The following cut-back found Deshishku, who slotted home in the 17th minute to give the Young Violets a 1–0 lead.
Vienna try, Unger keeps the team in the game
Vienna seemed largely unfazed by the setback and continued trying to push forward. Although the Döblingers frequently got into the opposition half, clear shots on goal were rare as the Young Violets defended compactly.
In the 32nd minute, the visitors had a good chance on the counterattack, but goalkeeper Unger was there to make a safe save. Shortly before halftime, the Vienna keeper once again showed his class in the 40th minute when he tipped a deflected ball around the post for a corner.
Thus Vienna went into halftime trailing narrowly 0–1.
Bitter start to the second half
Vienna came out unchanged after the break and immediately tried to equalize. The Döblingers pushed for more possession and sought attacking opportunities, but once again the visitors from Favoriten struck ruthlessly.
In the 55th minute, Austria took advantage of another counterattack. Gantschnig slipped unfortunately in a duel, leaving Deshishku free to shoot. The Austria player made no mistake and increased the lead to 2–0 for the Young Violets.
Vienna increase the pressure
Despite being two goals down, Vienna continued trying to fight their way back into the match. In the 61st minute, coach Hans Kleer reacted with a triple substitution: Monschein, Mergner, and Zeidler came on for Nagele, Stratznig, and Nnamdi to provide new attacking impetus.
Just minutes later, Zeidler had a good opportunity. After a cross, he struck the ball directly on the volley but sent his shot over the visitors’ goal.
Chances remain unused
Vienna kept pushing and searching for a goal to get back into the game. Shortly afterwards another substitution followed, with Edelhofer replacing Prohart.
Monschein also had a good chance when he received the ball in the penalty area and shot immediately, but his attempt narrowly missed the target. In the closing stages Vienna had clearly more possession, but against the well-organized Young Violets defense they lacked the decisive chances to close the gap.
A long-range shot shortly before the end created some danger but did not lead to a goal.
Looking ahead
In the end, Vienna had to settle for a 0–2 home defeat. Next week the team continues: on Friday they face Austria Klagenfurt away before the international break begins.
