Impressive performance in the battle for 3rd place

In the 19th round of the Vienna City League, third-placed 1980 Wien were the visitors. A tough opponent who had already pushed us to the limit in the first half of the season. The opening matches of the spring campaign had not gone entirely to plan for our team, as the potential shown in pre-season had yet to be fully translated into league performances.

Dominant from the start
The approach for this match was clear from the very first minute: dominate the midfield and create shooting opportunities quickly. It took barely a minute for the first shot on goal, which narrowly missed the target. In the 6th minute, Staudinger had a great chance to make it 1–0 after excellent work down the left flank, but goalkeeper Bodrazic somehow managed to keep it out. In the 8th minute, the visitors had their first presence in front of goal, but a harmless header was easily collected by Troindl. This moment was not particularly noteworthy in itself, but it reflected the overall pattern of the match: Vienna were clearly in control, while the visitors showed glimpses of quality that were consistently dealt with by the Blue-Yellows’ alert and composed defense.

First reward for strong play
Several promising attacks initially came to nothing, and the opposition’s attempts were well neutralized. Eventually, however, this strong opening phase was rewarded. Simon Ellen fired a powerful shot from the edge of the box into the net to give the Blue-Yellows a deserved lead.

In the 28th minute, Red Star became genuinely dangerous, but Troindl made an excellent save from close range. In the immediate counterattack, Zeidler narrowly missed with a lob. Soos also tested goalkeeper Jakl, but there were no further major chances before halftime, and Vienna went into the break with a narrow lead.

In control until halftime
The tempo of the game dropped somewhat afterward. The Blue-Yellows controlled proceedings, winning many duels in midfield, but failed to consistently carry their dominance into the opposition’s penalty area. It took until the 36th minute for Staudinger to get another clear chance, but once again the visiting goalkeeper reacted well.

This marked the beginning of an exciting final phase of the first half. The visitors became more adventurous but were repeatedly stopped by Vienna’s well-organized defense. At the other end, the final pass often lacked precision, and just before halftime Staudinger narrowly missed the chance to effectively seal the game.

Quick decision after the break
Right from the restart, Vienna made it clear they wanted to decide the match quickly. The first attack was intercepted, but the second brought success: Jerabek elegantly chipped the ball over goalkeeper Bodrazic to make it 2–0.

Less than two minutes later, Ellen finished off a perfectly executed move down the wings to make it 3–0.

Composed until the final whistle
From the outside, Vienna appeared to be cruising toward a comfortable finish, but in reality, it was the result of a focused and committed team performance. The hardworking and never-giving-up visitors rarely threatened Vienna’s solid defense.

In the final quarter-hour, Jerabek and Milic added two more highlights, sealing a convincing 5–0 win and capping off an all-around excellent performance by the Vienna amateurs.
