Vienna Secures Three Well-Deserved Points in the Derby
In Matchday 24 of the Austrian 2. Liga, First Vienna FC 1894 faced Floridsdorfer AC. After taking a 1–0 lead into halftime, the Blue-and-Yellows defended their advantage confidently and secured a deserved derby victory.
Following Friday’s home defeat against Kapfenberg, the next heated clash awaited on Easter Monday against the FAC. In the “El Danubio,” Vienna aimed to finally end their long winless run against their city rivals—and they did just that.
Two Changes to the Starting XI
Compared to the previous match, Vienna made two adjustments: Pistrol and Edelhofer came into the lineup for Nnamdi and Zeidler. Even the traditional Easter “egg tapping” before kickoff went Vienna’s way—a small but symbolic win before the match began.
Fast Start, Few Chances
The home side started aggressively, applying high pressure early on. Vienna, however, stood firm and matched the league leaders at eye level. Clear scoring opportunities remained scarce in the opening minutes.
Gantschnig Converts from the Spot
Vienna struck with their first dangerous attack: Rosenberger initiated the move, Nagele was fouled in the box, and the referee pointed to the spot. Gantschnig stepped up and calmly converted to make it 1–0 for the visitors.
Vienna in Control
Vienna remained the more active side afterward. Edelhofer and Prohart combined well, while Nagele tested the goalkeeper from a tight angle. Further chances followed, including an effort from Zimmermann after a set piece, but the FAC defense held firm.
A Physical Derby, Vienna on Top
The game grew increasingly physical, with the hosts committing to tough challenges. Still, Vienna controlled possession and dictated play, while FAC relied on imprecise counterattacks.
Deserved Halftime Lead
After a composed and committed first-half performance, Vienna deservedly went into the break leading 1–0.
Second Half: Vienna Holds Strong
Vienna remained unchanged after halftime, while FAC made early substitutions to increase pressure. Despite their efforts, Vienna’s defense stayed compact.
FAC’s Best Chance
In the 55th minute, FAC had their best opportunity, but Piskule narrowly missed the target. Shortly after, Vienna made their first substitution, bringing on Zeidler.
Chances at Both Ends
Vienna threatened again through a Zimmermann header, while goalkeeper Unger was called into action at the other end, dealing confidently with a dangerous cross.
Defensive Stability Pays Off
FAC pushed for an equalizer but struggled to break down Vienna’s well-organized defense.
Turning Point: Red Card
In the 73rd minute, the decisive moment arrived: Zimmermann was fouled by Maier, who received his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving FAC down to ten men.
Vienna Pushes for a Second
With the numerical advantage, Vienna created further chances through Luxbacher and Rosenberger but couldn’t extend their lead.
Unger Becomes Matchwinner
Late in the game, FAC nearly equalized, but Vienna goalkeeper Unger produced a brilliant goal-line save to preserve the lead and emerge as the matchwinner.
Vienna saw out the final minutes with confidence and secured a well-earned three points in the derby.
