Vienna turn the game around against Sturm II and celebrate a 2–1 home victory
In the 25th round of the ADMIRAL 2nd League, Vienna hosted Sturm Graz II at Hohe Warte. After falling behind, the Döbling side fought back and equalized before the break. In the end, the Blue-Yellows celebrated a 2–1 home win.
Strong message before kickoff
Even before kickoff, attention was drawn to an important initiative: under the motto “Fanblock Bande,” youth players from both teams accompanied the teams onto the pitch with a banner highlighting the Women’s Helpline and the initiative. As part of this campaign, the advertising board in front of the fan block is being made available free of charge to the Austrian Women’s Shelters Association (AÖF). Vienna enter home match with momentum
From a sporting perspective, the Döbling side entered the match full of confidence. Following their derby win on Easter Monday against FAC, Vienna aimed to secure back-to-back victories for the first time this spring in their home match at Hohe Warte against SK Sturm Graz’s second team.
Head coach Hans Kleer relied on continuity, fielding the same starting eleven as in the previous match in Floridsdorf. Pistrol and Gantschnig formed the central defensive pairing, while Bauer once again played on the right flank.
Open start with chances at both ends
Vienna got off to a good start: shortly after kickoff, Luxbacher followed up in the penalty area, the ball reached Nagele, but no shot materialized. Sturm also threatened early—Mustafic received the ball in the box, but his shot only hit the side netting.
In an overall open opening phase, Vienna showed promising attacking moves, but lacked the decisive final pass. This was also evident in the 13th minute when Nagele combined nicely down the flank, but his cross into the middle was blocked.
Setback after deflected ball
As the match progressed, the visitors grew into the game, while Vienna continued to push forward without creating clear chances. In the 29th minute, the setback came: a deflected ball fell to Peinhart, and although Bauer attempted to clear it, he could not prevent the goal that made it 0–1 for the Styrians.
Vienna push for the equalizer
Vienna remained unfazed. In the 37th minute, Edelhofer tried his luck from distance but narrowly missed. Shortly after, a corner created danger: Nagele got a shot away, but it was blocked. Another cross soon caused problems—Zimmermann reached the ball ahead of the goalkeeper, but the keeper managed to intervene.
Zimmermann scores deserved equalizer
In the 41st minute, the deserved equalizer finally came: Edelhofer delivered the ball into the box, Nagele cleverly laid it off for Zimmermann, who slotted home to make it 1–1.
Red card and big chance before halftime
Just before halftime, things turned hectic: after a hard challenge, Lazarre received his second yellow card and was sent off. With the numerical advantage, Vienna had a chance to take the lead with the last action of the first half but failed to convert.
Vienna start second half strongly
The visitors made a substitution at halftime, but Vienna clearly had the better start to the second half. The Blue-Yellows came out with energy and immediately put the Graz defense under pressure, repeatedly delivering dangerous balls into the box.
First chances to take the lead
In the 50th minute, Bauer headed a corner just wide. Two minutes later, the ball was already in the net: after a long pass from Luxbacher, Zimmermann poked it in, but the goal was disallowed for a marginal offside.
Vienna pin Sturm back
Vienna kept up the pressure, at times pinning the visitors deep in their own half. In the 57th minute, Edelhofer tried from distance again, his shot deflected out for a corner. This too was dangerous: Pistrol headed just wide.
Deserved lead from a corner
After a double substitution by the visitors in the 62nd minute, Vienna remained dominant. In the 65th minute, another long ball caused problems: Bauer won an aerial duel and tested goalkeeper Lorenz, who just tipped the ball over the bar.
The resulting corner finally brought the deserved lead: Bauer was once again in the right place and this time put the ball into the net—2–1 for Vienna.
Substitutions on both sides
Shortly after, Vienna responded as well: Edelhofer made way for Zeidler. The hosts remained in control and dictated the play.
The visitors attempted to inject new energy with further substitutions in the 75th minute, but still could not take control of the game.
Vienna see out the lead comfortably
In the 80th minute, Vienna made a double substitution: Monschein and Seo replaced Nagele and Zimmermann. Seo made an immediate impact, but his shot from a good position went just wide.
In the closing stages, coach Kleer introduced Szerencsi for Luxbacher to add fresh legs. Vienna saw out the lead confidently.
Home win at Hohe Warte
In the end, it was a deserved home victory for the Blue-Yellows, who delivered a dominant performance and were rewarded with three points. It marked their first back-to-back wins of the spring. Next week, a top clash awaits away against title contenders Admira Wacker.
