Vienna secure home win against Wels
In Round 28, Vienna faced Hertha Wels and claimed three points thanks to a strong first half and a 1–0 lead at the break, backed up by a solid defensive performance.
With three rounds remaining, Vienna hosted newly promoted Hertha Wels at the Hohe Warte. Head coach Hans Kleer was forced into changes in central defense due to suspensions: Szerencsi and Bauer replaced Pistrol and Gantschnig. On the flanks, Nnamdi started on the right and Zahirovic on the left in place of the injured Rosenberger.
High pressing and plenty of duels
The match began with high intensity. Both teams pressed early, looking to force mistakes. The game was physical from the outset, though clear-cut chances were initially lacking. Neither side managed to gain a decisive advantage in the opening phase.
Vienna take the lead
Vienna went ahead in the 18th minute. After a cross from Edelhofer on the right, Zimmermann rose in the box and headed home to make it 1–0.
Just two minutes later, Vienna had another opportunity. Nagele sent Prohart through on goal, but the goalkeeper came out on top in the one-on-one. In the 30th minute, Wels tried their luck from distance, but the shot went well over the bar.
Shortly afterwards, Vienna threatened again. A cross into the box found Prohart, whose header, however, went over the target.
Vienna in control
As the game progressed, Vienna increasingly took control. In the 38th minute, Luxbacher flicked on a cross to Zimmermann, who failed to get a clean shot away and the ball ended up with the goalkeeper. Moments later, Vienna were dangerous again: Zimmermann controlled a long ball brilliantly but was denied by the keeper, who pushed the ball out for a corner.
The resulting corner caused further danger. The ball fell to Prohart, but his header went over the bar.
Deserved lead at halftime
Vienna were the more active side towards the end of the first half and went into the break with a deserved 1–0 lead.
Wels improve after the break, Vienna stay solid
After the restart, Wels showed more intent and tried to apply pressure. Vienna, however, remained compact defensively and allowed little. The visitors were most dangerous with high balls into the Vienna penalty area, but lacked precision in their finishing. Overall, the game lost some of its tempo and drifted along for long stretches.
Few clear attacking chances
In the 61st minute, a long ball sailed into Vienna’s box, but goalkeeper Unger was alert and claimed it safely. Shortly after, another attempt from Wels followed, but it also posed little danger.
Fresh legs for Vienna
In the 62nd minute, Vienna made a triple substitution: Ungar, Monschein, and Odagaki came on for Nagele, Zimmermann, and Edelhofer. Despite Wels’ efforts, Vienna’s defense remained solid.
Wels try, but lack cutting edge
Wels continued to push for an equalizer, but clear chances were scarce. In the 68th minute, Szerencsi cleared another high ball into the box. Two minutes later, there was a moment of danger: after a header from a Wels attacker, Unger produced a fine save to tip the ball over the bar—though the situation would have been ruled offside anyway.
Vienna show attacking intent
In the 75th minute, Vienna introduced Seo for Prohart. Shortly after, the home side combined well in attack: a neat move involving Seo and Ungar found Odagaki in the box, but his turn and shot went just over the bar.
Quiet closing stages
Wels also made changes in the 79th minute but were unable to turn the game around. A free kick led to a header, but it did not trouble Unger. In the 81st minute, Jerabek came on for Zahirovic and immediately had a chance, though a long ball into the box was just beyond his reach.
Vienna see out the win
In the closing minutes, Vienna remained composed and saw out the lead without trouble. A late free kick from Wels caused a brief scare, but the ball went narrowly wide. In the end, Vienna secured a deserved home victory and claimed another important three points in the run-in.
