The Vienna family mourns the loss of Alfred Tatar
A sad day for First Vienna FC and Austrian football: Vienna cult coach and former player Alfred Tatar has passed away today.
It is with great shock and sadness that we learned of the death of our former player and coach Alfred Tatar. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
A defining personality on and off the pitch
As a player, Alfred Tatar represented the Blue-Yellows from 1986 to 1987. In the summer of 2010, he returned to Vienna as head coach and left a lasting mark on the club during one of its most challenging periods. Between 2010 and 2013, he guided Vienna to survival in the ADMIRAL 2. Liga year after year, often under extremely difficult circumstances and frequently through nerve-wracking relegation battles. After a total of 105 competitive matches, the club and Tatar parted ways in 2013.
However, Alfred Tatar will be remembered by Vienna not only as a player and coach, but above all as an extraordinary personality and beloved fan favorite. With his unmistakable humor, direct manner, and legendary quotes, he long ago achieved cult status. One unforgettable example remains his tongue-in-cheek description of Vienna’s playing style as the “antithesis of Barcelona” or as a “modern version of crowbar football” — meant ironically, but still deeply connected to the club’s history to this day.
“Fredl” Tatar was a defining figure of a special era in the club’s history. Through his passion, authenticity, and emotional connection to Vienna, he leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond football.
Vienna mourns a club legend
The entire Vienna family mourns his passing and would like to express its sincere condolences to all of his relatives and companions.
Before today’s match against SW Bregenz, a minute’s silence will be observed. Vienna will also wear black armbands during the match in memory of Alfred Tatar.
