More Than Just a Friendly
A match steeped in history. An evening for football romantics. A reunion of two tradition-steeped clubs that first met almost a century ago.
On 30 January 1933, Vienna visited Queens Park Rangers in London as part of its legendary tour of England and caused a sensation by claiming a remarkable 3-0 victory. Ninety-three years later, the two clubs meet again – with the London outfit, founded in 1882, travelling to Vienna for this special occasion.
Few opponents could be more fitting for Vienna than Queens Park Rangers. For the history of the Blue & Yellows is inextricably linked to the story of British football.
British Co-Founders
It was British gardeners employed by Baron Nathaniel Mayer von Rothschild who organised one of Austria’s first-ever football matches on one of the Baron’s meadows. Four Brits faced four Austrians, laying the foundation for a unique footballing story. This encounter gave rise to Austria’s oldest football club: First Vienna Football Club 1894, founded on 22 August 1894.
Even the club’s iconic crest bears a British influence. William Beale, one of the club’s founding members, designed the famous emblem featuring the Triskelion, inspired by his homeland, the Isle of Man.
Now Vienna is set to add another special chapter to its remarkable history at the Hohe Warte, a venue that has been the stage for unforgettable football moments for generations.
