Special Needs Team Successfully Defends National Title
There is fantastic news from our Special Needs Team! Despite challenging circumstances at the National Special Olympics Summer Games in Vienna, our team kept their focus and determination. After the outdoor competitions had to be cancelled due to the heatwave, the football tournaments were moved indoors at short notice. Once again, our team proved its quality: With an outstanding performance, Special Needs Vienna 1 remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and successfully defended the national championship title they won in Oberwart in 2022.

Heatwave Leads to Schedule Changes
This year's National Special Olympics Summer Games got off to anything but an ordinary start. Due to the ongoing heatwave, all outdoor competitions had to be cancelled to protect the health and safety of the athletes. While the disappointment was understandably significant, the decision was unavoidable. Fortunately, an alternative venue was quickly found for the football competition, allowing the tournament to go ahead indoors.
Two Vienna Teams Deliver Outstanding Performances
Vienna competed in the Traditional Football competition with two teams. Both sides impressed with their commitment, team spirit and passion, delivering excellent performances throughout the tournament.
Special Needs Vienna 1 remained unbeaten throughout the competition and finished in joint first place alongside the team from Innsbruck. As a result, the blue-and-yellow side successfully defended the national championship title they first claimed in Oberwart in 2022.
Special Needs Vienna 2 also enjoyed an excellent tournament. At the Special Olympics, teams are ranked using the Divisioning System, which groups teams into different divisions according to their level of ability. A total of three divisions were awarded medals, and Vienna celebrated two gold medals: Special Needs Vienna 1 won gold in Division 1, while Special Needs Vienna 2 claimed gold in Division 2. An outstanding achievement that highlights the remarkable development of our entire Special Needs Programme.
Sport Brings People Together
With the conclusion of this year's National Special Olympics Summer Games, another extraordinary celebration of sport has come to an end. Once again, the event demonstrated the unique power of sport to bring people together, showing how naturally athletes with and without intellectual disabilities can compete side by side, celebrate success, and create unforgettable memories.
We are incredibly proud of our entire Special Needs Team and congratulate all the players, as well as the coaching and support staff, on this outstanding achievement.
