Vienna Remain Unbeaten Against QPR
A memorable evening at Hohe Warte: In their fifth pre-season friendly, First Vienna FC played out a goalless draw against Queens Park Rangers in front of 2,820 spectators on Saturday evening. Two weeks before the start of the competitive season, the historic encounter provided another valuable test and renewed a fixture in which the Blue-and-Yellows had already made history 93 years ago.
Defensive Discipline on Display
In an entertaining contest played in front of an excellent crowd at Hohe Warte, both teams produced disciplined defensive performances. The visitors from the English Championship held a slight edge during the opening half and created the better opportunities.
Koki Saito fired over the crossbar before Bernard Unger produced an excellent save to deny Rumarn Burrell from the visitors' best chance of the first half. Shortly afterwards, Nico Madsen missed another promising opportunity after being set up by Burrell.
QPR changed their entire starting XI at half-time, allowing Vienna to grow into the game after the break. Bernhard Zimmermann tested Matteo Salamon from close range, while Liam Morrison produced a superb last-ditch clearance moments later to deny Florian Prohart what looked to be the opening goal for the hosts.
Both sides had chances to snatch victory in the closing stages. Jaylan Pearman and Justin Obikwu both went close for QPR, while Vienna continued to defend resolutely and ultimately earned a well-deserved goalless draw against the English Championship side.
A Reunion After 93 Years
Organised by Onside Sports, the historic fixture brought together two clubs whose roots are deeply intertwined with the early history of football. For Vienna, it was a successful first home outing of the new season at Hohe Warte and another encouraging step in the build-up to the start of the competitive campaign.
Competitive Action Draws Closer
The Blue-and-Yellows have one final pre-season fixture remaining before the new season begins. Next Saturday, Vienna travel to face TSV Hartberg in their last friendly.
The competitive campaign gets underway on 25 July with an away tie against Mattersburg in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup, before Vienna host Sturm Graz II at Hohe Warte in their league opener on 1 August.
