Vienna Kick Off the Season in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup Against Mattersburg
The wait is finally over—the new season is here. First Vienna FC 1894 begins its competitive campaign on Saturday with a first-round clash against Mattersburger SV in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup. Kick-off at the Pappelstadion in Mattersburg is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Successful Pre-Season with an International Highlight
Vienna can look back on a productive summer preparation. The Blue and Yellow won five of their seven pre-season matches, including an impressive victory over Bundesliga side GAK. At the same time, the newly assembled squad used the past few weeks to build chemistry ahead of the new campaign.
A total of eleven new signings have joined the squad this summer, while fourteen players have departed the club.
The standout moment of pre-season came in the international friendly against Queens Park Rangers. In front of more than 2,800 spectators at Hohe Warte, Vienna held the English Championship side to a goalless draw, impressing with a disciplined defensive display while also creating several promising attacking opportunities.
Away to Mattersburg
Vienna's first competitive opponent of the season is an ambitious Mattersburger SV side. The successor club to the former Austrian Bundesliga team has enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent years, climbing from the lowest division all the way to the Regionalliga Ost. Last season's Burgenland League title once again underlined the club's ambitions.
Despite entering the match as favourites, Vienna is fully aware of the challenge ahead. The UNIQA ÖFB Cup has long been known for producing surprise results, and no opponent can be underestimated.
Head coach Patrick Enengl is looking forward to the match while remaining cautious:
"Facing Mattersburg gives us an immediate benchmark at the start of the competitive season. As everyone knows, the cup has its own unique character, and underdogs are always capable of causing an upset. I expect an intense and hard-fought match in which we need to be fully focused from the very first minute. We are all incredibly excited for the start of the season."
Squad Update
Head coach Patrick Enengl will be without Max Mergner for Saturday's cup tie. Goalkeeper Bernhard Unger, as well as Benjamin Rosenberger, Christoph Monschein, and Philipp Breit, remain doubts. A decision on their availability will be made shortly before kick-off.
