1–4 Defeat Against Austria Salzburg
Following a successful start to the season last weekend, Vienna travelled to face Austria Salzburg on Matchday 2 of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga. The Blues and Yellows made a strong start and took an early lead through Zimmermann. However, the hosts grew into the game and eventually secured a 4–1 victory.
Compared to the match against Sturm Graz II, head coach Patrick Enengl made two changes to the starting XI. Marlon Winter replaced captain Luxbacher in midfield, while Youssouf Soukouna started in attack instead of Maximilian Fillafer.
Zimmermann Gives Vienna an Early Lead
Vienna made a flying start in Salzburg, taking the lead after just four minutes. Following a counter-attack, Soukouna laid the ball off to Zimmermann, who calmly finished to score his second goal of the season and make it 1–0.
After Vienna took the lead, Salzburg gradually found their way into the game. In the 15th minute, Huetz tested Unger for the first time, but the Vienna goalkeeper made the save. Shortly afterwards, Rohrmoser fired narrowly over the crossbar.
Salzburg Equalise
Vienna continued to struggle as the match progressed, with the hosts enjoying more possession and territory. In the 40th minute, Gebauer had a great opportunity, but Unger produced a strong save to deny the equaliser.
However, the resulting corner eventually brought Salzburg level. The ball fell to Rieder, who made no mistake to score the equaliser. The teams went into half-time level at 1–1.
At the break, head coach Patrick Enengl made three substitutions. Nagele, Zimmermann and Winter were replaced by Luxbacher, Stratznig and Monschein.
Austria Salzburg Make a Flying Start to the Second Half
Austria Salzburg made a perfect start to the second half. A long throw-in from the hosts was flicked on dangerously and fell to Kahrimanovic, who finished to make it 2–1.
Just a few minutes later, Gebauer was played through and beat Unger to extend Salzburg’s lead to 3–1.
Despite the difficult start to the second half, Vienna tried to respond. A header from Monschein and a dangerous effort from Soukouna, however, failed to produce a goal.
Huetz Makes It 4–1
In the 61st minute, it was Salzburg who found the net again. Following a low cross from the right, Huetz was left completely unmarked and had no difficulty finishing to make it 4–1.
Vienna made another double substitution in the 70th minute, with Prohart and Gruber making way for Rosenberger and Anselm.
Salzburg controlled the game until the final whistle. Vienna struggled to find a way through the hosts’ defence, and the match ended in a clear 4–1 defeat for the Blues and Yellows.
Vienna will host FC Liefering in the next round of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga. In just under a month, Vienna will also have the opportunity to make amends in the UNIQA ÖFB Cup, when the team travels to Austria Salzburg once again.
