Three Points for Vienna in the Südstadt
In Round 4 of the ADMIRAL 2. Liga, Vienna travelled to face Admira. After an evenly matched and action-packed first half, the teams went into the break goalless. In the second half, Zimmermann headed home the decisive goal to give the Blue and Yellows a valuable three points with a 1-0 away victory.
Changes to the Starting XI
Head coach Patrick Enengl made several changes to the starting line-up compared with the previous match against Liefering. The return of Christoph Monschein to the starting XI was particularly pleasing. Tobias Anselm and Marco Gantschnig also started the match. Luckeneder, Zimmermann and Jung initially took their places on the bench. Maximilian Fillafer also returned to the squad following his injury and started on the bench.
The Döbling side started the match with plenty of energy and created a promising attack early on. However, the final pass failed to find a teammate.
Admira Create the First Good Chance
The home side then enjoyed a strong spell. In the 3rd minute, Admira created the first major opportunity of the match following a corner. De Wit rose to meet the ball with a header, but Vienna goalkeeper Unger was alert and managed to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Vienna responded in the 9th minute. Following a misplaced pass by Admira, Monschein laid the ball off to Luxbacher just outside the penalty area. He immediately took aim, but his effort flew narrowly over the bar.
Vienna Grow More Dangerous
In the 14th minute, the Döbling side created their next good opportunity. Following a corner, Marte laid the ball off to Gantschnig, whose effort flew just over the crossbar. Shortly afterwards, Monschein threatened again. The returning starter tried his luck from a tight angle but narrowly missed the near post.
Admira created another chance in the 20th minute, but the effort went straight into Unger’s arms.
Gantschnig Denied on the Goal Line
In the 26th minute, Vienna were awarded a corner. Gantschnig rose highest and directed a dangerous header towards goal, but the Admira goalkeeper managed to keep the ball out right on the goal line.
The match remained intense as both sides continued to create opportunities. In the 29th minute, the home side tried their luck from distance. Unger was once again equal to the effort and tipped the ball over the bar. At the other end, Gantschnig fired from range in the 34th minute, but his effort was too central and the goalkeeper was able to block it.
Chances at Both Ends, No Goals Before Half-Time
Vienna threatened once more shortly before the break. In the 37th minute, Luxbacher spotted Monschein making a run and, after turning, laid the ball off to Soukouna. However, the forward was decisively challenged as he attempted to finish.
The teams therefore went into half-time goalless after an entertaining and fast-paced first half. Both sides had created good opportunities, but neither had been able to break the deadlock. It was 0-0 at the break in the Südstadt.
Feeling Each Other Out After the Break
Both teams returned for the second half unchanged. The opening stages saw both sides once again cautiously feeling each other out before Vienna increasingly looked to move forward. The Döbling side pushed for the opening goal but initially failed to register an effort on target.
Triple Substitution for Vienna
In the 60th minute, head coach Patrick Enengl made his first changes, bringing on three players at once. Monschein, Luxbacher and Anselm made way for Zimmermann, Nagele and Jung.
Just moments later, Admira created their first dangerous opportunity of the second half. An effort from a tight angle was, however, dealt with attentively by Unger, who turned it behind for a corner.
The hosts also made two substitutions in the 62nd minute.
Vienna Take the Lead
In the 64th minute, things became uncomfortable for Vienna following a free-kick into their penalty area. After a scramble, an Admira player got a shot away, but the effort failed to trouble Unger. Shortly afterwards, the Vienna goalkeeper was called into action again and dealt with another Admira attack.
Then Vienna struck: In the 67th minute, Marte delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area. Zimmermann was in exactly the right position and rose highest to meet it. His header found the back of the net — 1-0 to Vienna!
Vienna Defend Their Lead
After taking the lead, Vienna made another substitution in the 73rd minute, with Maximilian Fillafer replacing Soukouna.
Admira increased the pressure during the closing stages and searched for an equaliser. However, the Döbling side defended with concentration and allowed the hosts very few clear-cut opportunities. Admira made another double substitution in the 80th minute.
Vienna made their final change in the 86th minute, with Breit coming on for Prohart.
The Blue and Yellows ultimately held on to their narrow lead and were able to celebrate a 1-0 away victory in the Südstadt. Zimmermann’s headed goal secured three important points for Vienna.
