Vienna celebrate convincing cup victory in Salzburg
In the second round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup, Vienna travelled to face Austria Salzburg. After a closely contested first half, the Blues and Yellows went into the break with a 1–0 lead. Vienna then took control in the second half and secured a convincing 4–0 away victory.
Vienna travelled to Salzburg for the second round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup. Head coach Patrick Enengl made two changes to the starting XI compared to the previous league match: Jung replaced Luxbacher, while Ungar came into the starting lineup for Gruber.
Salzburg threaten early
Vienna immediately looked to attack with their first move of the game, but the first major chance fell to the hosts. Following a counterattack in the third minute, Huetz tried his luck from distance. Unger produced a strong save and was also alert to keep out the follow-up effort from a Salzburg player.
The resulting corner caused further danger. A Salzburg player got on the end of the ball with an acrobatic effort and struck the underside of the crossbar. The ball bounced back into play, much to Vienna's relief. In the tenth minute, the hosts tested Unger from distance once again, but the effort down the middle caused the Vienna goalkeeper no problems.
Vienna grow into the game
Vienna created their first good opportunity in the 16th minute. Anselm delivered the ball into the middle, Jung cleverly left it for Marte before receiving it back. His subsequent effort, however, lacked power. Seven minutes later, Ungar tried his luck from distance, but his shot sailed over the Salzburg goal.
Marte finds the top corner
After half an hour, the Blues and Yellows finally took the lead – and in spectacular fashion. Vienna combined well going forward, with Marte controlling the ball brilliantly on the edge of the box before curling his effort into the top corner. A superb finish from the number 24 to make it 1–0 to Vienna.
The hosts had another chance in first-half stoppage time. Huetz won his duel and got a shot away, but his effort went narrowly wide of the Vienna goal. Vienna therefore went into the break with a 1–0 lead.
Vienna start the second half strongly
Head coach Patrick Enengl made his first substitution at the break, bringing Fillafer on for the booked Jung. Vienna made the stronger start to the second half. In the 48th minute, Anselm sent a cross into the box, with Soukouna heading just over the Salzburg goal. Four minutes later, the forward had another headed opportunity, but from a difficult angle he was unable to trouble the goalkeeper.
Ungar doubles the lead
In the 55th minute, the Blues and Yellows were rewarded for their strong start to the second half. Anselm battled his way along the edge of the penalty area before getting a shot away. Following a scramble in the box, the ball fell to Ungar, who made no mistake and fired Vienna into a 2–0 lead.
The hosts responded with a double substitution and became more active in attack. In the 58th minute, Unger was called into action from a free kick just outside the box, tipping the effort over the crossbar. Overall, however, Vienna continued to defend with composure and allowed very little.
Vienna made a double substitution of their own in the 66th minute, with Gruber replacing Breit and Mrzljak coming on for Ungar.
Anselm puts the game beyond doubt
Just three minutes later, Anselm made it 3–0. The attacking player received the ball on the edge of the box, beat his marker and finished with a turn-and-shoot effort.
In the 72nd minute, Enengl made another substitution, bringing Zimmermann on for Soukouna.
The hosts came close again in the 88th minute, but their effort towards the unguarded goal narrowly missed the far post. Two minutes later, Zimmermann put the icing on the cake at the other end, scoring to make it 4–0.
Vienna therefore secured a convincing 4–0 away victory and booked their place in the third round of the UNIQA ÖFB Cup.
