Vienna Lose 1-4 to Runners-Up SKN St. Pölten
In the 6th round of the ADMIRAL Frauen Bundesliga, Vienna faced a difficult challenge against league runners-up SKN St. Pölten. The Blues and Yellows put up a strong fight, particularly in the first half, but ultimately suffered a 1-4 defeat.
Following their clashes with Austria and Sturm, Vienna once again faced one of the league’s top teams. Head coach Denny Krcmarek’s side welcomed SKN St. Pölten to the Hohe Warte.
Defensively Solid Start
Vienna began the match with focus and allowed very little defensively in the opening stages. In the 9th minute, the Blues and Yellows combined well going forward, but Milanovic’s final shot was saved by the St. Pölten goalkeeper. Overall, the match developed into an evenly balanced encounter, with SKN enjoying slightly more possession.
Visitors Take the Lead from a Set Piece
In the 16th minute, a corner gave the visitors the lead. The ball fell to Plank Aagaard, who fired a powerful shot into the net to make it 0-1. Dangerous chances in and around the penalty areas remained rare after that, with both teams playing cautiously and waiting for mistakes.
Open Exchange Before Half-Time
In the 36th minute, Havel battled her way through the opposing defence but was denied by the goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation. Just one minute later, Kurkutovic sent her effort over the bar. In the middle of Vienna’s strong spell, the visitors struck again. Following a counterattack down the right, the unmarked Vágó headed home in the 39th minute to make it 0-2.
Vienna responded in the right way. In the 42nd minute, Havel was played through and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to pull one back and make it 1-2. That was the score at half-time.
SKN Increase the Pressure After the Break
The visitors started the second half strongly. In the 46th minute, Grabenhofer initially made an excellent save, before the post came to Vienna’s rescue from the follow-up effort. Three minutes later, Plank Aagaard rounded the Vienna goalkeeper after a counterattack, but Mädl cleared the ball off the line at the last moment.
In the 51st minute, however, the Blues and Yellows’ defence was finally beaten. Woelki broke down the left and set up Vágó, who scored her second goal of the match to make it 3-1.
Vienna Fight Back but Struggle to Create Chances
After an hour, head coach Denny Krcmarek introduced fresh legs, bringing on Höcherl for Havel. Vienna managed to cope better with the visitors’ pressure as the game progressed, but offered little threat going forward.
In the 70th minute, Plank Aagaard put the result beyond doubt. After dribbling down the right, she produced a superb finish from a tight angle into the top corner at the near post to make it 4-1.
Wondrejc Misses Chance to Score a Second for Vienna
In the 74th minute, Wondrejc and Sergeeva came on for Sarac and Brunmair. Shortly afterwards, the Blues and Yellows had another good opportunity. Following a cross from Hahn, Wondrejc attempted a shot on the turn but sent her effort over the bar. There were no further goals, leaving Vienna to suffer a 1-4 defeat to SKN St. Pölten.
