Strong Performance Rewarded with Three Points
As part of a double-header, the Blues and Yellows’ youngsters were able to play their home match against Post SV at the Hohe Warte. The visitors arrived in Döbling full of confidence after a resounding 7-0 victory over 1980 Wien.
Unfortunate Start
There were goals to be seen in this match as well. Vienna started brightly but were unable to finish their first attack properly. The visitors, however, made more of their first opportunity. Following an attack down the right, Zagan inadvertently turned the cross into his own net. A truly unfortunate start for the visibly motivated youngsters.
The team did not let this setback affect them and continued to push forward with a varied attacking approach. All that was missing was the finishing touch. The best opportunity came after around 20 minutes, when Krpuljevic was played in by Edelhofer but was denied by goalkeeper Ljevar.
Vienna Turn the Game Around
After 22 minutes, Vienna’s efforts were rewarded. This time, Krpuljevic provided Edelhofer with a perfectly weighted pass, and the deserved equaliser was secured. But the Blues and Yellows were not finished there — they continued to press forward.
A shot from the edge of the penalty area narrowly missed the target, but in the 32nd minute Birkhahn produced a composed finish, elegantly curling the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net to give Vienna the lead.
Post SV offered little for long stretches, although shortly after Vienna went ahead, the visitors created a few dangerous moments that tested the Döbling defence. The home side dealt with them confidently. Vienna had the final chance before the break, but after a chaotic situation in the penalty area, Post SV managed to clear the danger with considerable difficulty.
Chances Missed After the Break
After half-time, it was initially Vienna who came closest to scoring again, but Ljevar denied them with an excellent save. The game then swung from end to end, with both teams producing promising attacking moves.
Fischer, who had only recently come on, was unable to turn Birkhahn’s pass into a goal, once again being denied by Ljevar. At the other end, Post SV also began to pose more of a threat. Vienna goalkeeper Jucewicz was called upon several times and did his part with a number of good saves.
Visitors Equalise
The Vienna goalkeeper was powerless to prevent the equaliser, however. Djuric was given too much space on the left edge of the penalty area and fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner.
Shock and frustration for Vienna? Not at all. Coach Bradaric’s side immediately looked to get forward again. After a determined attacking move, Fischer sent his effort narrowly wide.
Edelhofer Decides the Match
In the 80th minute, Edelhofer found himself in possession after another chaotic situation and used his experience to beat goalkeeper Ljevar and restore Vienna’s lead.
The visitors responded immediately, throwing players forward in search of another equaliser. They managed to create a good opportunity, but Jucewicz produced another excellent save to secure all three points for the Blues and Yellows.
A deserved three points following a clear improvement in performance compared to the previous week. The team visibly looked much more comfortable on the Hohe Warte pitch.
