Victory in the Neighborhood Derby
After the narrow but deserved win over the FAC Amateurs, Gökce Tuna’s team aimed not only to secure another three points to stay close to the top of the table but also to get their recently stalled goal production back on track. Their neighbors from the “Gruabn” came into the match full of confidence after a win against Red Star.
Energetic Start and Early Lead
It’s a familiar story by now – once again, Vienna started the game full of energy. In just the 2nd minute, Nagele broke free on the left side of the penalty area and was brought down by the goalkeeper, but referee Pfeiffer saw no foul. Vienna kept up the pressure, while WAF showed their counterattacking danger after five minutes through Zwickl, whose run was stopped by Luca Roschütz for a corner.
In the 10th minute, captain Valtchev made a strong solo run toward the box and played a perfectly timed pass to Birkhan, who left goalkeeper Mazidi with no chance – 1–0 Vienna. The early lead boosted Vienna’s attacking play, and the hosts were close to a second goal soon after. A cross from Staudinger caused chaos in the WAF penalty area, but the ball wouldn’t fall kindly, and the visitors managed to clear for a corner.
Vienna Dominant – WAF Dangerous on the Counter
In the 20th minute, Birkhan was harshly brought down by goalkeeper Mazidi on the edge of the box – again, the referee waved play on. Vienna remained dominant but struggled to create clear chances. WAF, meanwhile, launched two threatening counterattacks, both through Zwickl. On the second occasion, Vienna were lucky as the lively WAF striker struck the post.
Chances Before the Break and the 2–0
Vienna regained momentum in the 34th minute when Staudinger set up Stogiannidis, whose shot was turned away for a corner. The next attack came down the left flank – Pistrol found Zeidler, who crossed into the middle, but Staudinger couldn’t connect. Vienna now had chances almost every minute, with Pistrol again testing Mazidi from close range.
But Pistrol eventually got his goal. In the 43rd minute, Vienna caught WAF off guard with a quickly taken set piece, and Pistrol finished clinically for a 2–0 halftime lead.
Searching for the Decisive Goal
After the restart, the Blue and Yellows looked to seal the match early. Staudinger fired just two minutes into the half, Matteo Roschütz went close shortly after, and Nagele also saw his shot miss the target.
A Brief Spell for WAF
Then Vienna’s attacking rhythm briefly dipped. The team held onto the ball too long, and passes in the final third lacked precision. The hard-fighting visitors began to push forward more often, earning a few corners, but never truly troubling Troindl in goal.
Vienna Back on the Front Foot
Vienna weathered that phase and soon started creating chances again. Stogiannidis intercepted a ball brilliantly in midfield, but his cross found no takers. Staudinger tested Mazidi with a powerful shot toward the far post, and moments later Uysal was denied by the upright.
Two Late Goals Seal the Win
Fans had to wait until the 85th minute for the next breakthrough: a flowing move down the left stretched the tiring WAF defense, leaving Zeidler unmarked in the box to finish coolly for 3–0. Just two minutes later, Zeidler turned provider, assisting Uysal, who made it 4–0 and wrapped up the victory.
Positive Verdict from the Coach
After the match, head coach Gökce Tuna was pleased with his team’s overall performance: “We’ve learned from our recent matches and focused more on the fighting aspects in training. Of course, that can sometimes come at the expense of our usual style, but today the boys did a great job — they accepted the battle and found their way back to their game.” Naturally, Tuna also noted a few points for improvement — topics for the next training sessions.
